I'm lost
February 2007

APR 14, 2007 10:07 PM

If you have yet to see this video that's starting to make the rounds, you really, really have to take a look. It's simultaneously horrifyingly . . . "inappropriate" and hilarious. Also frighteningly catchy.

Garance Franke-Ruta tracked down the director and star. Apparently the former is a member of a NY comedy group called The Dregs, and most of his videos feature very campy drag queens.

Which raises the question--is the video's star, Sandy Bell, a bio-woman or not? Certainly the video itself is campily outrageous enough that she could be a drag queen or transsexual.

Or, you know, maybe she's just a tall, beautiful woman with a fabulous sense of humor.

In any case, I predict that this video is going to be all over the internets once people get back to their desks on Monday morning. But y'all can say you say it here first.

Bitch_PhD has watched this thing about twenty times already, and is still sort of shocked.

There's something Margaret Cho-ish about this. Reminds me of the parody songs she's co-written.

So, yeah, it's funny and all - but mostly I'm intrigued 'cause Sandy Belle there is pretty damn hot.

I think I get the jist of it in the first twenty seconds after she opens her mouth. Her voice just rubs me the wrong way and I can't listen to any more. Maybe if someone else did a rock version, like Cat in the Cradle...

I'd settle for just reading the lyrics though.

Oh please. Lysistrata is hardly obscure.

And that chick is ugly.

Oh, no, really, believe me, you don't. It just gets better and better. By which I mean, more and more "oh. my. god."

Impressively relevant and feminist criticism of the song, there.

+1
she's pretty in that boring country muisic way, like Miranda Lambert or whoever. plus her voice is annoying as hell. i'm assuming that she sings that way because it's a parody of a country song, but still.

I'm not sure, but I think that at 1:40 - 1:52 she references Magic Missile from D&D.

I'm sure that is an incredibly witty post but I just don't get the references.

Update from TheGarance

UPDATE: OK, she's not a transsexual. The singer is The Dreg's Sandra Bauleo, a model and
comedian. You can see her head-shot over at R & L Model Management. Also: Score one for GFR's cultural instincts. Sandra and the gang will be performing this Tuesday, April 17, as part of the PuPu Platter act at Manhattan gay nightclub Boysroom, on Avenue A and 12th Street, according to My Comrade, The Revolutionary Gay Magazine, which calls the song a "music video spoof."

That place is a block away.

I should have caught that you were kidding. I also should have specified I was actually rolling my eyes at finklestein for lauding your literary knowledge over something as mainstream as Aristophanes.

I thought his comment was pretty patronizing, frankly.

I think given the context "her" appearance is extremely relevant. She's beckoning the troops home (albeit with her tongue planted firmly in cheek) with an ugly mug.

If I were making light of the looks of a political candidate or CEO or any other woman whose looks have nothing to do with her public persona, I would deserve getting called out for a lack of feminist sensibilties. In this case, I'm justified.
