Mignola's got a lot on his plate right now. Blade 2 director Guillermo del Toro has written the script for Hellboy and is currently shooting it as we speak in the Czech Republic and Mike is intimately involved with the project. I got a chance to talk with Mike about sex, hell and Selma.

Check out Dark Horse Comics' website for Art of Hellboy.

Check out Mike Mignola's site at hellboy.com.

Daniel Robert Epstein: Ok so you've been to Prague. How is Hellboy going over there?

Hellboy has been the only comic book I've read for many years. I'm massively excited about the movie. Good stuff, thanks for the article! Damn nazis!

Being a fan of Hellboy for quite a few years now, the news of a movie both excited me and scared me. Some movies tend to ruin the comic, and others capture it. I liked Blade2, so i was very curious as to what the script will entail, and knoiwing the imagery of the comic-i'm quite excited to see the result.

Mike M, is perhaps one of my favorite artists. i love the style, and deep shading on his work. i was just at the bookstore the other day, and saw the "Art of Hellboy' book on the stands. it was huge, and i lacked the cash to buy it, but i'll be back.

I did read a bit about the "Hellboy" movie in Entertainment Weekley a month or so ago, and it was fairly vague. I can see Ron Perlman in the role though, and have been a fan of his since "City of Lost Children".

I'd have to say I'm just to excited about all of it, the subject matter, the director, and the star. i can hardly wait myself...

I love Mike Mignola's illustration style. I find it unbelieveable that Disney wants to try and adopt it and that the style was used in Atlantis. I don't know, I don't remember ever thinking about Hellboy while I watched Atlantis.

Mignola also taps on some brilliant Lovecraftian and Nazi Occultism stuff. I love it.

Hellboy's characterisation is is a great contrast from other ways of handling the hero.

i remember being a kid and reading Alpha Flight. he did a bunch of covers for that; i think that was the only job he had in comics at the time - but it was strange how immediately awesome his stuff seemed. I hated Alpha Flight but i collected every issue, every month he did the cover. it's amazing how realized his style was even then. like jack kirby but so unique on its own. thanks for the interview.

Hellboy owns, but I am really not down with the sudden thrust of comic-genre movies. A major let down is the new Batman coming out which was supposed to be based of Year One (I think by Frank Miller?) and now it's not, let down yes, but I guess it's better than having some Hollywood bigshot ruin something good. Spiderman luckily had Sam Raimi (and his loveably recurrent cast members, go Bruce Cambell!) Anyways, Hellboy, we'll see, in fact, I don't know anything about who's directing it or what. I'm going to go look that up right now!
