That's mostly true. Maybe something like "Hi, I saw your profile on ___. My alias on ___ is ____. I noticed you mention ____. I feel ____ about ____." would be better.

If you mean SG members: how about commenting their profile or meeting them in person before IMing them. Out of the blue would probably be creepyish. If they're familiar with you they might not think so, right?

I actually welcome blind IMs. Chances are that if I'm signed on to AIM, I'm bored off my ass and looking for strangers to talk to.

Clara has great talking-to-strangers advice, I'll usually start out fairly mellow like that.
