I'm lost
OLD SKOOL

JUN 27, 2003 02:00 AM

I'm tired of these kids and their Harry Potter crap. mad When I was a kid it was all about the LWW, the Chronicles of Narnia. Remember Peter, Susan, that little prick Edmund, Lucy, and Mr. Tumnus? And who could forget the great Aslan? Well now it looks like Hollywood is developing LWW and the other 6 parts of the Chronicles into feature films. WETA digital, the people behind Lord of the Rings are working on the visual effects. biggrin

After reading LWW many, MANY years ago, I still have the fantasy that I will indeed find a wardrobe into another dimension. I'm still hoping.

How about A Wrinkle in Time? I think these two books in particular fucked with my head.

i loved the books up until the last one, where the christian allegory went over the top and he killed the chracters because he couldn't deal with them being adults. the one that does grow up to some degree (susan) isn't allowed into heaven.

sod that.

BUT LWW is excellent.

anyone ever read susan cooper's Dark Is Rising series? now THERE is a good kids' fantasy series.

Yeah, after I found out it was christian propaganda, I enjoyed them quite a bit less, and felt violated after having to read the last book in the series because my mom was on some kind of evangelical kick.

In comparison, kids' books that get condemned by religious groups for supposedly promoting witchcraft seem like tons of fun. Though I've never read any HP books, and I don't plan to in the future.

And just as a PS, does anyone remember Goose Bumps? Wasn't that a great series of non-secular mediocrity? Plus there were enough volumes that every 7th grader could have their own favorite.

Those are the best books ever. I read them again every few years. None of these new fantasy kids novels compare.

I have a friend. He's one of those guys that is gay but doesn't know it yet. We all joke that he lives in Narnia because he's so far back in the closet. I love that!!!

I have a closet that opens into a large room where each wall is painted a different, vibrant color, with random projections sticking out of it. It also has black lights, spiffy furniture, and a big screen TV. A living room is just a living room, but a SECRET living room is awesome. as long as you don't keep it a secret.

I know the books are kiddie versions of the Bible, but a good story is a good story. I remember my imagination was on overdrive when I read LWW, and that's all good to me.
I used to think Turkish delight was some sweet concoction with bits of turkey in it. puke

The thing about A Wrinkle in Time for me is the.....well, fantastic physics of it all. Alternate dimensions have always held great fascination for me. Scenes from the book still haunt me - Charles Wallace reciting times tables so the giant brain can't control his thoughts, the TESSERACT, et cetera. Wow, good book. I don't remember the ones that came after it - did they have to do with the Bible?

Disney did it for ABC's Wonderful World of Disney.
The trailer is on the Spykids movie on DVD.

Does anyone here realize that Lord of the Rings is also
based AROUND Christian belief?
You can buy the movie in most Christian book stores,
as well as the books them selves. There are even books
about HOW exactly actions from the storyline reflect
certain views and beliefs...I mean specifically!

I'm just saying that just because the Bible enters into it
doesn't mean the story isn't good. C.S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien used to be friends who hung out in a particuler
english pub whose name escapes me. But it is referenced to in one of the books about the LOTR stories.
