Me either- I mean, I can respect it for its historical factualness, but to me it's almost the same thing as Star Trek conventions.

I dunno.

They didn't even have Internet porn or bulletin boards back then... I think it's taking nostalgia just a little too far.

I enjoy the SCA more since it's more historically focused and people don't try to do retarded accents while their breasts flop over their vinyl bodice, but I do enjoy ren faires for the performances (like L's fire-blowing) and food (bread bowls, turkey legs, etc).

I have limited ren faire/SCA experience (and plan to keep it that way), but I do know that there is one salient feature to them that I'm sure everyone here can get behind:

ALCOHOL!!!!!!!!

These people drink like fish. Trust me.

whatever

Let's not forget that everyone used a communal wooden scraper to clean their ass in the out houses. Mmmmm-mmm..... disease. Progress is good. Toilet paper is good.

I lived with Ren Faire types for a YEAR. It was torture. Now, to bust some thread myths:

1) They drink like fish.
First of all, mead tastes like ass. All it is is lots of fermented sugar with bits of other flavor added in. Drink Koolaid for Chrissakes! I even had "good mead" once. No dice. Plus, the people I knew really could not handle their liquor.

2) Swords.
As much as I think L is a cool guy, the whole swords aspect does not outweigh the inherent strangeness of it all.

3) The women
Uhh...no. At least, not any of the Ren Faires I came into contact with.
3.5) The drugs
See above

4) The costumes
As much as I respect my roomate taking a whole year to make a chain mail vest, it was just too much for me to bear. Link by link by link. And what the hell is with those poofy dresses anyway?

5) The fantasy world aspect
As far as I know, people tend to get relegated to their spots prior to the Faire. Cool if you're royal. Sucks if you get stuck as the stable cleaner.

Nothin' personal. Courtesy of your local parade rainer- outer.

ren fests rule for the following (and ONLY the following) reasons:

most vendors sell smokes and beer to minors
you can dip your hand in hot wax and make that gnarly hollow hand mold
all the fey LARP kids from your drama class that you hated were always there, in character

I don't know, I've been to a couple and they were fun. Kind of like the anachronism without all the lousy things like sexism and communal ass-scrapers. Besides, watching guys battle it out in armor is more fun to watch in real life than in the movies, because there's no editing to mislead the eye.

While looking for this link (which was originally a mocking joke) I saw that those things look pretty fun. Costumes, so it's like Halloween which is good. Lots of cleavage and hotties. People drinking and fighting and talking silly. Music. Sounds like a good time to me. What's *not* to like?! The sun.

Somewhere between fantasy and reality is a ground tread by those of us with room to dream that life can be more then it really is. We don't look for this time to over take life, but for awhile its what life is. Or maybe I've been drinking to much
