I too, agonised over the very same decision for a month(okay, two). I ended up with an 800mhz ibook, for 949.00. Why? there are two main reasons

1) I did not want to spend an extra $1000.00 for the ability to compress video faster, and some sex appeal, (also the iBook seems to take abuse a little bit better, the plastic is a little bit stronger than the metal)
2) these machines are very fast. I am a graphic designer. I can run Photoshop, dreamweaver, image ready, flash, safari AND internet explorer at the same time, and get no noticeable performance drop. very little waiting for all but the most demanding photoshop tasks, and even then short wait times.

okay, three reasons...you can also update the firmware to attach a desktop monitor and span them (not mirror, but actually have the desktop be the width of both screens)

not to mention, $2000 for something that will be obsolete in three years (even with a dvd-r drive) i mean, firewire 800 will be old by then, let alone the new terabyte ethernet and airport ultra they're sure to invent to keep us buying....

there's my two cent's (which might buy you a floppy disc)

Powerbook if you use applications that need the G4 processor (video or graphics) If you are a mild user, the iBook will be fine, but I know I am going insane with the iBook I have on loan from Apple, and can not wait to get my hands on another powerbook after WWDC. Make sure you get an airport card (try to get them to throw it in for you there are more and more 802.11b spots popping up like starbucks and the verizon payphones where you can get mail wirelessly if you have an airport card...
don't get a 15", however, the new aluminum casing powerbooks have been redesigned to address some technical issues.

Ok, I'm willing to let some lucky SGer get in on the brand new 15" powerbook that'll arrive for me on Monday. I'm selling because I kinda changed my mind about it, but I can't get rid of it.

15"
867 MHz G4
combo drive
512 MB Ram
60 GB HDD
regular airport card

New in box, unregistered. I'm not even going to open it to get a whiff of that lovely brand-new factory packaging smell that I'm addicted to.

I'll start it at $1700

Holy... fucking... shit. Deal of the century folks. Get it while the getting is good.

Yeah, to the original poster: I mixed my band's last CD on this machine. Piece of cake. I converted analog tape to digi: With the built in audio in jack, it was a breeze. But seriously, wait until July. With new hardware and software comes price cuts on other things. The G3 is on its way out. I wouldn't buy a G3 based computer now. I know all technology will be out of date soon enough, its just the G3 already is.
I just hope iPods get a price cut soon. I want one badly. love

I love my 12 incher...
...and my little Powerbook.

BWAHAHAHAHAHH

Seiously though, I'm hung like a flea and I absolutely love my 12" Powerbook despite the fact that I picked it up pre-price slash.
It's more than capable of handling most everything that I do, the keyboard is unbelievably comfortable and responsive, photoshop love s it, the screen kicks ass, bluetooth rocks my t68i and let's face facts..it's hot (and not just under your left hand).

I've got a 12 inch iBook now that I got a really good deal on (600MHz, 384 MB RAM, DVD = $500 and still under warranty smile). However, if I were buying one full price I'd go with the Powerbook, no question. My iBook is nice and all, but it's way out of date. An up-to-date Powerbook will last you a good long time, while even now I'm wishing this little machine did things a little faster, had a few more options, etc.

I'll be buying my own 15 inch Powerbook once the next revision comes out. I'm hoping it'll be a G5, but I'll settle for an updated G4 if that's all that's available.

Is it still worth getting a Powerbook? I'm in school, doing graphic design, plan on running Adobe CS 2 on it and probably want to get the 15" screen. Is there going to be a G5 anytime soon?

And where can I find a new PB G4 cheap? Or cheaper than Apple Store, anyway.
