Multi-instrumentalist studio wizard Jim O'Rourke is the newest member of NYC's avant-garde legends, Sonic Youth, but that's merely added a new chapter to hisWar and Peace-size resume. An accomplished artist in his own right, having written the soundtracks to the filmsLove Lisa and the upcomingAn Injury To One, as well as a multitude of albums in his own name. O'Rourke mixed Wilco's classicYankee Hotel Foxtrot, in addition to working with Jeff Tweedy's side-project, Loose Fur. I've merely listed...

Keith: you insult Jim O'Rourke with all of your questions. Do you know anything about HIM? Sonic Youth is an icon but O'Rourke is a GOD. Show some respect to your subject and do some research before you waist their time and mine...like maybe experience some of their work? ya know, have a listen.

I dunno. I think the questions were pretty balanced for someone like me who is familiar with Jim's work, but not INFORMED. I know he's had his hands in a lot of things over the years and to cover it all might overwhelm this space. I'd imagine a lot of people, like myself, know less about Jim + SY than him on his own, so I dug the interview and got a nice general sense about the guy. Maybe you can do a follow-up and zero in on some more esoteric o'rourke shit.

I can't believe that I live in a world where Jim O'Rourke is a member of Sonic Youth and David Pajo is a member of Zwan!?!?
Gastr del Sol is one of my all time favorite bands and Jim O'Rourke's contributions to indie rock and experimental music are immeasurable (just look at that extensive discography!) Thanks to KeithD for taking this on.

"Jim O'rouke from Sonic Youth?"-Interesting concept for an article, given the underground reputations of both of them. You did a good job going into depth on his relationship to the band, though, I must say.

Thanks Keith, that was a great interview. I think O'Rourke's one of the most interesting guys in contemporary music, though I know he can be evasive with interview questions. He was fairly forthcoming this time, which is nice. I especially liked reading about his early influences. I found it funny that he was "into minimalism" in high school. In high school I was into Rush. Lots of Rush.
