That was an absolutely awesome read! Jhonen is a very talented guy and seems to have too many ideas for his own good! I can't wait for his next project!
wow, he's almost as nonsensical and inside out wonderfully panoramic as my mind. I would love to flip him the bird and say "Take that you mongoloid underoo eating fuzz bucket of bunny crap. go eat a whore" and then hug him awkwardly and run off to stare at some shiny thing and pretend it didnt happen.
SG just got so much better with this interview. I've been reading Jhonen's work since early high school and own all the Zim dvds I can find.....his work is as addictive as body mods, sex and drugs.....and all make me happy
OH MY GOD! IT"S GOD! Jhonen is the man.........hehe...man who likes his slurpies...
I know all of you worship this guy. I know I'm opening myself up to a lot of hate comments...but I do so enjoy being the the devil's advocate.
Johnnen Vasquez was an icon or sorts...what? TEN YEARS AGO?! "I Feel Sick" was OK at best. Johnny and Squee were great and all...but he's been riding those two waves to DEATH. I've seen Nny and Squee re-released about a dozen times. I think I Feel Sick was re-printed twice. Granted, Zim had it's hilarious moments...
I dunno. When I was 16 and angry at the world because I got grounded for missing curfew, his stuff seemed great. Now, I flip through all the original issues every so often and think, "Yeah, I guess that's still funny. Good thing I'm drunk."
Doesn't he refer to his fans as "zombies" or something along those lines somewhere in this interview. From what I've seen in my travels, that's a rather fitting term. Vasquez enthusiasts remind me of zealotous Bush supporters. The SECOND you speak out against him, they jump down your throat and curse you out.
I've read one issue of I Feel Sick that my friend has. I love Invader Zim and still manage to catch it on occasion on the Nicktoons Channel. Digital Cable is the Bomb, but poor Zim's nipples must be sore, because they are still milking that shit. I always wondered how many Bong Hits the people at Nickelodeon did to give this guy a show on their network. I would think that the only kids that would be into the show would have to be like Gaz and Dib. Oh well, Great Interview. It was interesting.

i wouldn't call myself a jhonen enthusiast. i do immensly enjoy his work. well mostly jthm and invader zim. with the comic, i like the 'hate the world' outlook he has not because i agree with him but because it is entertaining. and i guess the humor in it tickles me the right way. and zim just cracks me up. and the art work is absolutely amazing. i am jealous of fractal's tattoo. i had one drawn up of nny sitting on a crate with 2 blades in his hands. but never managed to save for the actual tat. now i have no idea where the picture is.
but anyway. the whole point is his art is fantastic. there is no denying that.

But that's just me.
You realise he doesn't actually have control over re-releases? I don't see how he is actually making an effort to cash in on his 'icon' status-in fact he's pretty self-deprecating about the whole thing.

What makes you say that JV doesnt control how and when and who Nny and Squee are released
Because as far as I know, owning the characters is intellectual property, but the actual publishing of the comics and the ability to do such is controlled by the publishing company.
In a similar vein to how, say,David Bowie is unable to prevent five million re-releases of every album he did before 1980.

sorry, your thought on this is incorrect
yes Jhonen would have to find a publisher to do it. but slave labor is always happy to bring them back into print. plus jhonen can take them to any publisher he wants and do it through them. hes so popular i cant imagine any indie publisher turning him down. or if he wanted to do he could pay to have them printed and distributed himelf, people do that every day, its just a grind when he could just get a house to do it.
Hmm...yes to bad I am not an SG as well because I am almost positive I fit in a box. Oh well if I can't have the box thing then I will just have to find something better.
He's a hilarious guy...I love that he insults his fans and they love him and his work more for it...like "your a dick who thinks Im a Robot-minded-moron, here is my money".
