I'm just wondering if everyone in here is all anti-radio and anti-Gap and anti-mainstream and all that kinda shit.......I mean, how else can I put this......I dunno, does everyone in here think that they have to fit into a certain sorta demographic to be accepted in here, or are some of you not in your own little groups of punks and goths and ravers.......I think I can fit in with just about anybody, goths, punks, preps, nerds, dorks, geeks, uh......but not jocks........

And I don't mean for this post to sound like I'm against anyone or anything, just curious as to how you all think.....some people think goths should stick with goths, punks with punks, whites with whites, etc......you know.....can't we all just get along?

I pretty much look like the poster boy for "middle class, white corporate hack". Hell, I just paid somebody to erect a white fence around my yard... biggrin

On the other hand, most of the people I hang out with are goth or "alternative", and there's never been any talk of "selling out" or "being conformist". It's about attitude and common interests, I guess.

Or I just don't care whether people accept me or not, since I'll accept anyone who's honest about what they believe and true to themselves. I think it's safe to say that my employers never wonder if I'm a "yes man", and oddly, this has gotten me more respect and opportunity than I would have expected.

Anyhow, not sure if that answered the question, but hey, the mind wanders when medicated... wink

I dunno, considering that I'm old enough to be most of y'all's mother, am way past my punk/metal/angry-at-the-world stage, rarely touch alcohol, am familiar with grammar and syntax and am not into weird/rough/kinky sex, that pretty much makes me a non-conformist 'round here, I'd venture to say.... wink

Lighten up, Francis. I love you all. Wave your freak flag high. biggrin

Right on.

I would think the last people to not accept you are those that are already making themselves different. I mean.. I think most people on here are accepting of others on the comments, and its a good venue to post your objection, and have it be discussed, on the side with porn biggrin

I'm about as conformist as you can get! I mean, I'm in the army for fuck's sake! The thing I noticed though, from leaving my Oi! getup mostly behind is that the people I hang out with that dress basically in the normal fashion are as interesting (if not more interesting) than the punkers and skins and such I used to hang out with. Or maybe thats just cause I'm not in high school anymore.

i've conformed to non-conformity...

no matter what you're being intergrated into a system that has a certain set of rules no matter how hard you try... this is how things exist... there has to be certain contexts for something to take shapes, certain parameters, the whole the first rule: there are no rules thing, it's still a rule, and people shape their dogma's, social structures, fashion tastes, ect. around certain unspoken laws that they've conformed to... try to escape it as you'd like, but there is no such thing as anarchy... human's are to structured of a race to fall into complete dissaray... there's to much order in our chaos

Subculture becomes mainstream as soon as enough people get involved. Sad, but true.

But we can all get along. I think we get along quite fine on here... don't you?

What I think is really odd about Mindless' intro for this thread is his concern with "how [we] all think"? That tiny clause alone presupposes so much I don't know where to begin.

Do "we" share anything but an appreciation of naked chicks? Here and there, sure, there are commonalities, but what I love about SG is the ubiquity of dissent. There's always someone on hand (usually Al, I've found) ready to offer an opinion that stands a debate on its ear.

Well, Im the epitome of paradox. I played football in high school (and I was good), I dated (and still do date) the pretty blond cheerleader type, and I was in a frat, and yet I seem to fit in with all of these freaks. Hehe.

It's all about state of mind. If you're the fuck worrying about how 'punk' you are, you've already lost.

it depends on who youre asking. if you asked a bunch of silly goth kids, theyd probably say yes. if you asked people who know me well, theyd say no. i think everyone, myself included, is to an extent. but the things, i feel, and the things i do, i do because i like them. i wont say its because i dont care what anyone thinks, because i do care what a select few people think, but those few people dont judge anything i do. but on the whole, i am who i am, and the rest of the world can fuck itself if they disagree or dont like it

Conformity is really misunderstood and always taken as a negative. The only time when it's bad is when you let other people run your life or copy other things because its cool. Enjoying a certain scene and style of dress and taking it up is just that, the way you dress. Conformity of mind is the true problem. The people who don't think, and just do what they are told, no questions asked. Those are the bad ones.

On a side note I love when people (whether punk goth emo or whatever) claim that the way they dress is because they are an individual, and all their friends dress the same because they are individuals too, and well they are groups of invidiuals.

Ive always been the "strange" guy in my school...
I didnt like to study boring things like chemistry and I hated the "playboy" way of life...
I liked strange comics and weird (for them) musics... and was quite antisocial...

As social creatures, humans need to fit into a group. When they don't, they get sad and loney and beleive that the world hates them. Social groups are a good thing. The problem comes with naming them. In my experience labels based on a style involve people who find support ina common appearance and talk about a certain set of music or whatever that gives them somethig to discuss without beinging in larger personal issues if they do not want to. There are other ways of classifying people, ususally based on common interest, like geeks, that at least give the individuals who make up the group an identity beyond their fashion sense.

The common bond in my closest friends is that we are rather socially inept in greater society. We have distinct styles of dress, but they all involve a frequent wearing of hoodies. I don't really want to classify us cause right now I just of them as the most interesting people I know.

Indeed...especially since, depending on what time of the day it was, any one of those labels could easily have fit me quite accurately in high school. I'm not conformist or anti-conformist or anything like that, I just reserve the right to have more than one side to my personality.
