I only am using this part of your quote because I think the rest of your argument is dead on and very tragic.
However, I do believe some athletes are creating something. I think we can all agree some artists are geniuses. However, what is a painting really? Oil on canvas. What is music really? Certain vibrations picked up by the human ear. Something has to be recognized, deconstructed, understood, and appreciated at some point to be validated. I think there are a few people who recognize and appreciate the tremendous amount of physical and mental ability it takes to participate and excel in high levels of athletics. If people with a high understanding of a game leave an arena having witnessed a spectacular performance, they just might be coming away with the level of appreciation that an audiophile has leaving a concert. For that person, the athlete/s have created something.
