I realize that trying new cuisine is always supposed to be an adventure. However if the descripition of the #42 had included:

"Arterio-scleritically enhanced pork gobs cooked with PINEAPPLE CHUNKS and A BOILED EGG in a sterile synthetic dog-shit flavored broth."

. . , I probably would have ordered something with chicken in it.

What about your encounters with Vietnamese food, guys??

I had Vietnamese food tonight.. my "chicken with vegetables in a lemon grass sauce with hot peppers" served with steamed rice was pretty damn good.

And the tea was excellent.

i like a lil' pho' now and then, but i don't like a gob of pork on anything, and 1980 is the start of that crazy decade where the world tried to eat itself, it held it down for the 90's and now it is spewing it up for the 00's....

I get mine in China Town in NYC and IT ROCKS. I always get BBQ'd lemon grass chicken over vermicelli with extra spearmint and a side of spring rolls...I also love love love their curried muscles but then I always get really horny after I eat them...go figure.

Vietnamese food to have a care around:

Shrimp often comes with heads and tails still attached

There is no vegitarian pho. It would be like making vegitarian beef stew. There is, however, often excellent vegitarian soup.

The less you think about it at first, the better

Never order thousand year anything the first time

Pho, commonly said "faux", closer for americans to say "faah", better yet, to my understanding, if you can say "fur" with a soft or absent "r" (but my attempts at this are awkward), is beef noodle soup. If you eat beef hot dogs, you've already had anything in most pho. But to start I'd avoid the tripe or tendons, as the texture can get to a lot of americans. Oh, and the words themselves. But as I say, if you've eaten beef hot dogs...

The food tends to be subtle.

You can often get excellent mock duck, mock pork, etc.

Tidbits for your contemplation.

That's funny, the Vietnamese restaurant I was in had a whole list of dishes with unpronounceable names that involved only veggies and noodles or rice, sometimes with bean curd. Were all those dishes borrowed from another culture?

(edit:: not trying to be sarcastic or condescending or anything, I'm genuinely curious. Tonight was my first experience with Vietnamese restaurants.)

the pho' is meat based, and one of the mainstay dishes in vietnam, but they do cook a variety of other dishes, youare both right, everyone is happy, like ships passing peacefully in the night....

I love Thai food too....I haven't had Vietnamese food, but I know Anthony Bourdain fucking loves it. He kept going on about it at a book-reading I went to, and when I asked him "Where do you want to go next?" meaning what new country did he want to go to, he emphatically kept talking about wanting to go back to Vietnam...

I think I may be a pho addict.... 5 of my last 7 meals have been at a little Vietnamese place down the road. The sriracha sauce and I have come to an understanding... I will always put on too much, it will always make me cry and I will like it.
