Okay, it is only fair:

While we are on the topic of the BSA. . .

Full class A.
Knee socks and old style shorts (By the way, I am only 5' 1" and weigh 100lbs, so those teeny-tiny short were meant to be worn by an average 12-year old boy in the 60s or 70s.)

The lovely ensemble is topped off with my big honkinÂ’ keys and amber cycling goggles on my head.

I made the "scout" rank. The rest of my time was spent ditching camp to hike and canoe with my homies...

I was a cadette level girl scout. I was in scouts until I was 16. I loved every minute of it and got all the geek patches.

I was a boyscout. Very, very briefly.

I was a cub scout for most of my childhood though.

I was a girl scout and I still remember the motto.

On my honor, I will try, to serve God, and my country, to protect people? at all times, and to live by the girlscout law.

I wasn't allowed, because I had to take the bus home after school and couldn't stay for meetings. Now I'm kind of glad.

I had such a horrible time in Boy Scouts. So many traumatizing experiences. I was at scout camp once and the group the next campground over had this nuts scout leader who took a bb gun and shot the kids. It was all over the news. I think he did some other stuff too. Also (oddly enough at the same camp) this bear came next to our site and so we tried to get the counselors but apparently they were having a toga party (!?!) so I watched like 10 guys wearing nothing but sheets chasing after a bear screaming shit. I have a ton of other bad boy scout stories too.

Edited to add that I also once almost cut my thumb off at scout camp. Cut straight to the bone. Still have the scar. The guy in charge yelled at me for getting blood on the floor of the cabin.

I hated coming home one day on a thursday and my mom saying:

"Geuss what! your going camping for 3 days in the middle of the everglades!"

And I had a date with a princess named Zelda that weekend that went missed.

i fucking hated it.

and why wasnt i an eagle scout?
because i never could finish the dad blamed personal management merit badge, nor could i figure an eagle project that didnt have to do with gardening. or weed pulling or something.

I carved and installed a totem pole for a small community, my friend built an equipment shed for a local school...

I revamped an old playground in a bad neighborhood. New sandbox, volleyball court and basketball goal. In a month the sandbox was overgrown, the volleyball net was stolen, and the basketball goal was bent vertical. blackeyed

I was in the BSA for two years. It felt more like the Hitler youth then the Boy Scouts. Troop leaders and kids alike. Bunch of racist power freaks.

I Scouted for a wee while.

The whole thing was pretty dull - making traps for mice, running to one end of the scout hall to the other holding a candle, playing rounders etc.

I left after a couple of months, because of one of our great 'character building' excercises. We were told to stand in a large circle and pass a rolled-up newspaper to each other, behind our backs.

A whistle blew and whoever had the paper had to run round the outside of the boy-circle, chasing the person to their immediate left, whalloping them about the back and neck with the paper... whatever

I was. I quit right before I made Star. I was pretty good at it. Always patrol leader, and would've been SPL eventually. OA, all that stuff.

I had a crappy troop though. It was way too much like school. I liked camping and doing the outdoorsy stuff. But Citizenship in the USA? I did that in social studies.

That, and my troop was corrupt. The one time I wasn't patrol leader was because the election was rigged by the Scoutmaster, who wanted his kid to be patrol leader. Instead I got to be scribe. SCRIBE?!? What the fuck is that shit?

Scouts is awesome though. I probably would have made Eagle if I was in a better troop.
