funny you mention that...there used to be this website called Anorexic Rec-room that fetishized anorexic girls and celebrated the heroin chic look that was popular in the late 90's. it doesnt exist anymore, probably due to copyright issues, but it makes you wonder, how sexy is that, really?

Yeah, I remember that site.

It also worries me that I look BIG compared to about 90 percent of the models in magazines...and I'm underweight!

weight is such a touchy subject when it comes to it's portrayal in the media. being a huge fan of haute couture and fashion mag's, i see it's place, but at the same time, i see the lousy example that it sets for youth. at least there's some more effort being put into portraying real-bodied women in the media these days. particularly in advertisements.

this is one of my touchy subjects. i'm like 6 feet tall and have never weighed more than like 135 pounds, and you know what? i eat like crap all the time. seriously i've been addicted to doritos for like 5 years, we're talking a bag a day. i have a freaky ass metabolism and its not my fault. but people, random strangers no less, take it upon themselves to ask me if i'm anorexic or bulemic, and i'm sorry, thats fucking rude. like any other logical person, i think we should be able to appriciate All kinds of body types, and while i know that skinny models make up like 90 percent of advertising and yes, thats way fucked up, i dont like bearing the brunt of it just because i cant gain weight. its wrong to single out any One body type and say "this is what women should look like". ok my rant is done. peace yall.

I get you, amber...I feel the same way, I get sick of people treating me like a freak or like I must have an eating disorder because I happen to be skinny. At the same time, in the fashion/model industry being skinny is almost a necessesity (at least in the mainstream, which seems to take up most of what we see), and I don't think that every model in those pics or in other pics you see in magazines just "happen" to be so skinny....I also don't think that it's okay to ONLY portray girls that are super-skinny, and I wish there were a lot more diversity to be seen in magazines and ads. But the constant portrayal of only skinny girls does not encourage good self esteem for young girls, no matter what size they naturally are.

This isn`t something i really talk about but i used to spend alot of time visiting Pro- Ana sites and even wrote for one. Let me just say that those pics only touch the issue, some site have galleries apon galleries. Check Jodie Kidd, especially in her earlier modeling days.
The most frusterating thing for me is that anorexia and bulemia seem completely natural responses to this type of imagery, yet we than try to force feed and recover these girls.
Why treat the eating disorder rather than the cause? It makes me so mad. Either we think girls should be healthy, or we idolize extreme thiness. We can`t have both.

That first girl was BLUE; is she an alien?
I don't really give models a hard time because I think it's mean to pick on people just cuz they're skinny genetically as much as people who are just fat genetically. I just hope people don't make themselves sick to change their looks.
I've said it before-- I've seen 100 pound girls who I thought were attractive (Kate Moss, Sarah Gellar), I've seeen a 500 pound woman who I thought was attractive (Cindy G; she had a website, but discontinued it), and everything in between. I think it's safe to say I don't have a "body ideal" for women. I hope they themselves can accept whatever weight their body is. Women are beautiful at any size, or height, or of any ethnic group.

My favorite self-accepting "fat girl" on the web is Electra Summers. I'd like to see her be an SG someday. My fave photoshoots on here are Devil, White Corset, Stairs, and Choco/Strawberry Syrup, mmm, mmm... love

Oh my frown frown

See, I just think that the problem is that many, MANY models are on crazy diets or have eating disorders because that's how they are SUPPOSED to look...most of the time it's not okay to be in that industry and NOT be super-super-skinny. Yes, I'm sure there are girls who are just that skinny naturally and that's great, everyone should be able to be happy and to keep the body they were born with, but no one should feel pressured to hurt themselves to get an idealized body type either.

I can't believe how oblivious the media can be about this sometimes, as well. They say that their images do not cause any self-esteem issues in people yet you can go to any pro-ana site and see these models and images shown as "thinspiration".

oh, wow- i was just about to put a link up for about-face. it's a great site. when i was in the middle of a nasty eating disorder a few years ago, that site helped me a lot, and helped me re-direct my self-loathing to where [one of] the real problem lies.

Well, I certainly don't think no skinny model has an eating disorder, and I would never say that. I think Kate Moss is naturally skinny. I don't know her past eating habits. She was a depressed and was drinking and smoking out on pot for a few years, but she's clean now...
Anyway, the modeling world is silly for its insistence on very skinny women. If you want me to say that Morgan, well yeah, I'll shout it from the rooftops cuz I always felt that way! biggrin I kinda thought my support of CIndy G and Electra made that clear. wink At the same time though, women, and especially teens in high school, can be made fun of for being skinny...like what if they have a flat chest, for instance?
I reiterate what I said before: all various women-types are beautiful, and the more variety of types of beauty we have, and are reflected in our media, the richer we are as a society.

Dude Gollum wasn't that skinny, I thinks its gross that woman get that skinny to feel attractive. I like meat on my woman. And by that I mean my mutual and equal female partners. I read an interesting article once on the rare, well rarer, opposite of anorexia that afflicts men. Its called muscular dismorphious and instead of thinking they're fat they always see themselves as too skinny and workout compulsively until they end up hurting themselves. I know its been said, but its sad that people abuse their bodies that way.

I understand this too, it's hard when you see normal sized women in the media shrink and shrink, like Helen Hunt. I've always been an unhealthy person, and I've gone through boughts of illness where I've lost 30-35 pounds. I look at myself in the mirror when I get that thin and I cry. I have no boobs and all my bones stick out. I don't know why anyone would want to be that skinny. I understand the whole "aren't you annorexic" thing too, it is just plain rude, no one has the right to just accuse you of having any sort of disorder. skull
