I had to check this story out a few times. Surely, it’s too late for April Fool’s Day jokes, right? Besides, The New York Times is a reputable paper; they’d never print a bogus story. So, I suppose I have to believe my eyes.

The story of Dewey, a rescued orange tabby cat who lived for 19 years in an Iowa library, has just been sold for 1.25 million dollars. Unbelievable.

With an eye toward creating the feline answer to the best-selling “Marley & Me,” John Grogan’s memoir of his misbehaving yellow Labrador retriever, Grand Central bought the book, currently titled “Dewey, a Small Town, a Library and the World’s Most Beloved Cat,” on Monday by making an offer high enough to pre-emptively shut down an auction.

“You can’t underestimate the market out there for people who love animals,” said Karen Kosztolnyik, the senior editor at Grand Central who will edit the book; co-authors will be Vicki Myron, the head librarian in Spencer, Iowa; and Bret Witter, a former editorial director at Health Communications, the publisher of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books.

Marley & Me, published in 2005 was a surprise best-seller, with over 1.85 million copies sold. Its advance, however, was a measely 200,000 dollars. Silly dogs couldn’t negotiate a book deal if they tried! Dewey’s story will have to sell more that 250,000 copies for the contract to pay off.

So, does this mean that Dewey is going to able to step up to some Fancy Feast and will he be in catnip for the rest of his life? Sadly, no. Dewey (full name: Dewey Readmore Books) will not be able to enjoy the largesse of his contract, since he died last November. One of the small-town librarians who adopted him, Vicki Myer, will be writing the memoir and cashing the fat check. As great as it is for her, one wonders if the publishing company could have spread the wealth around a bit.

(PointBlank, for one, will never mock cat ladies again!)

Two years? I'll see your two years and present you with my goldfish that my brother and I got at a carnival for knocking over pins that lived eight years.

Oh yeah.

If that was the title of the book, instead of the intensely boring mouthful that is "Dewey, a Small Town, a Library and the World's Most Beloved Cat," I might just have to buy it.
