PASTY-HAPPY: A TAKE ON THE NEW BURLESQUE

I go back with burlesque, myself.

Back to the 60's, when I was in junior high, when one of the voyeuristic treasures around our house was my old man's "Pictorial History of Burlesque" in the living room library. Girlie mags like Gent, Nugget and early Playboy notwithstanding (all pubic-hairless and pulse-pounding), the images of Tempest Storm and her 41DD" bust tipped with pasties --of Lilly Christine, her glam legs gleaming --these images of enticement...

Yeah, The Sadness of Sex is one of my favorite books ever written. For those of you that don't know, Barry Yourgrau writes amazing fiction, and if you like SuicideGirls I bet you would love his books.

Really, this book is unbelievably good, written by the man The New York Times Book Review called "an uncommon diagnostician of the curiosities of the human heart" and don't forget Barry is a big fan and promoter of SuicideGirls, I honestly can't tell you how flattering that is for us, he's a great, great writer, do yourself a favor and buy this book.

Okay, this may be a dumb question-- but is there a difference between a burlesque show and a cabaret show?

cabaret was oldschool nightclub entertainment - as i understand it, burlesque is sort of a specific form of cabaret.

burlesque was sort of the precursor to vaudeville - it was a variety show, but had much heavier sexual overtones than vaudville, which was "cleaned up" for family entertainment.

"talkie" movies pretty much killed popular theatre in the 1930s. frown ...but now it is back! smile

good, i'll keep you in mind! ;> i can do most of that contortion stuff, too. whee! there's a couple troupes here already, like the cantankerous lollies, dane's dames, um...kitty something...but it's all super 50's camp...i'd rather do something dark and more 30's cabaret/edward gorey inspired.

also, nice to meet you yesterday. biggrin

you too smile

her contortion stuff wasn't all that contortiony i guess, but it was pretty fucking fantastic to see it as part of a burlesque routine.

if you manage to start up some kind of regular night, let me know!

I'd love to be part of a true burlesque show. That means the girls and the comedy.

I'm probably one of the few guys in the country (my age), that has studied the burlesque, vaudeville, and english music hall stages extensively. I've taken the time to meet some of the last living legends of these days and learn from them. I've gathered hard to find and out of print works, and have even amassed a collection of original burlesque show material.

I sprinkle it into the work I currently do now, but would love to help put together a true burlesque show.

EDIT: GO see the Bindlestiffs! I have a buddy there, doing one of the best cigar box routines, you'll ever see!
