Despite his post-mortem ascention to god-like status, peace lovin' John Lennon was a dick. During a 1974 visit to the Playboy Mansion, the former Beatle almost got his ass kicked by some partygoers after he put out his cigarette on one of Hef's priceless Matisse paintings. At the time, Lennon was going through one of his prolonged separations from estranged wife Yoko Ono and blamed the incident on his being completely fucking wasted. Imagine that...

Hefner, now 80, says, "(Lennon) misbehaved a little bit and a couple of my friends took exception to it. I didn't witness it. I was elsewhere in the mansion. He put a cigarette out on a Matisse and one of my friends was gonna... But he had been drinking. I was a huge fan. He was under a tremendous amount of pressure, you know, from the government. They were strange times. And Lennon was one of my heroes."

Anyone who knows anything about John Lennon knows that he was always a total hell-raiser. By his own admission, he was cruel, jealous, egotistical, and all the rest. But even when he was being a dick, he did it brilliantly. What better gesture than putting out your cigarette on an expensive status-symbol/investment owned by some old fuck?

When someone lets me into their house, and offers me hospitality, I do my best not to abuse it, and part of that is not destroying their property. Lennon was himself a rich fuck, and I doubt he'd have been pleased about the same sort of gesture directed at his possessions. Even a brilliant dick, is still just a dick.

Lennon is not one of my heros.

I can't begin to imagine. I would absolutely shit myself if I saw the desecration of such a work of art. I don't care if it's Lennon

Wow, I've never seen so much John Lennon bashing. Usually everybody kisses his ass.

I'm sure Hef isn't bitter over it.

O Noes?!?

I found some good Lennon You Tubeness of something I've never seen. Surprisingly good quality for a You Tube upload. The making of the Imagine album:

If it wasn't it certainly is after it became "news" now.

I hate the destruction of art, but it is sort of art somehow perhaps to have a work of art altered by another artist - I'd stil be pissed. I'd certainly be wary of letting him drink in my mansion again.

If I were rich I'd probably bid on the painting.

being a great songwriter doesn't make someone a great human being. There's no reason to ever pretend otherwise.

celebrate lennon as a brilliant composer and an entertaining musician, but don't excuse his bullshit.

As much as I love his music, when I think of Lennon I always harken back to how he treated his "pre yoko" family

My father grew up in Liverpool, though he's a little younger than the Beatles. He used to tell me how he found it funny that Lennon was all peace and love, considering he had a reputation for being a dick and causing problems in pubs.

Of course, he still had the utmost respect for the dude. I mean, it's still Lennon smile
