Okay, so apparently today, on the last day of my auction, one of my items sold.

it's a digital camera that cost me about $350 four years ago, and I placed it @ $200

there were 4 bids...the first 2 bids were from the U.K., for $500 and $890 respectively. the third bid was from Nigeria for $999. the winning bid was from the U.K. again for $1009.

here's the email the winning bidder sent me:

Hello seller i am very sorry for not informing you that before i really apologise for that.I have another store in Africa which i need this item very urgently in next 5 day and i have forwarded the details of the item to my store manager and my customers really like it,so don't let my customers put a shame on me so please if the money will not be enough for the shipping cost please let me know and i will increase the money for you so please kindly get back to me soonest..........
Thanks

i don't like how this smells. is there anything i can do. i don't want to hand over my item to this guy. this is questionable to me.

Scam!! They're trying to get you to ship the item asap so that by the time payment bounces the item will be in their hands.

Don't ship until you get payment and that payment clears. It's as simple as that. I don't know what rules eBay has about declaring another bidder the winner, but if that guy can't get payment to you in time for him to get the product where he wants it when he wants it, that's his problem. If he cancels the sale, you just move on to the next person (assuming you can, and I think you can).

listen to bean

it is a scam. and the other bids were likely his ring.

save yourself the stress and re-list it as domestic only.

report him to ebay, so you dont get negative feedbakc.

or perhaps im being a negative douchebag and the glass is half full!

This is a pretty common Ebay/Craigslist scam. I'd go with the "domestic only" advice.

Scam.

You should be able to do the "Second Chance" dealio, where the second highest bidder gets another chance at it.

Forward everything to e-bay, his account will be gone in minutes.

gahhhhh this is why i only ship locally when doing ebay sales. so much mayhem. i wouldn't bend - i've been scammed before (not with that much $$$, though) and it's not fun.

Well, reading that, it doesn't actually say that he want it before the check clears. It says he is willing to pay more for a rush shipment. So, jack up the shipping and handling and give him the new price. Absolutely wait for it to clear (and even check with the bank and make sure it really has officially cleared), but no reason to write the guy off just because he's in a hurry.

just don't accept that bid at all. even if his payment clears, depending on the payment method he can charge it back and double fuck you.

report him to ebay then re-list it.

No one wanted it for $200?

None of those bids really sound legit.

That and it's a form letter that i have received when selling parts for trucks overseas. What he wants him to do is rush the shipment out immediately prior to the check actually making it to him, even though he says he will cover the extra cost. He's counting on the compassion of the seller to help him out and probably isn't going to pay him.

That paragraph there is a small snippet of what the entire letter consists of. I sell Bronco parts and motorcycle parts on E-gay all the time, i have received the exact same letter and turned it into e-bay only to find out someone else got scammed. American car parts overseas are gold to some people, and i am willing to ship, as long as they pay up front.

I've learned not to accept personal checks(the hard way), and have actually moved to using Paypal only.

It's a linear scam to the "Please, I urgently need your help. There is a large sum of money in a bank and we will pay you $___________ as a reward for helping us retrieve it......"

NBC Dateline just ran a show about the scams out of Nigeria. These scams have been going on since the 90s and they are bleeding into other areas such as other services preying on both our generosity and greed. Unfortunately, their local government is doing nothing about it.

I wonder if it would be at all lucrative to search junk yards for particular high-demand parts and then sell them in this fashion?

so I sent Ebay an email about it and hopefully it'll be taken care of...funny thing too, my other item i was selling (an iPod) was also auctioned off at the price I set but it was taken down because apparently the bidder's account was charged with unauthorized use by the account holder, so the transaction is null and void...and said bidder also bid on my camera as well ARRR!!!
