You are right to distrust what's said on TV, especially that which promotes detox diets.

People have been "detoxing" for thousands of years, but the scientists say there is no proof that such bodily purges work.

And they say most modern books and detox kits serve up "empty promises".

...

"The suggestion that elimination of noxious agents is enhanced because of this regimen is categorically unsubstantiated and runs counter to our understanding about human physiology and biochemistry."

Thats so funny. I just was looking at another holistic medicine scam the " ear candles" and one of the things that tipped me off on the packaging was thier claim of the medical establishment only having 60 years of experience but natural healing has tousands of years of experience.

whatever

I knew a guy who occaisionally fasted for detox who claimed that the zits he got while doing so were evidence of his body purging toxins. Much respect to him, but I sorta figure they were just the evidence of his immune system being compromised from the lack of nutrition.

Thanks for the input.
Here are some other suggestions that I've heard:
-a 1 month alkalinizing deep colon and tissue cleanse called Arise & Shine
-psyllium husk
-raw foods and juicing

anything involving the words "deep colon" is a little scary to me,
psyllium husk?
raw foods will be incorporated

Detoxification is a scam....and Quackwatch.com is your friend.

It can be terrifying to believe that one's body is being poisoned by toxins from within. But if this were true, the human race would not have survived, says Vincent F. Cordaro, M.D., an FDA medical officer. "A person who retained wastes and toxins would be very ill and could die if not treated. The whole concept is irrational and unscientific."

that's kind of missing the point of detox. of course your body can get rid of toxins and level itself off over time -- the idea is to ditch them faster and in a way that's less work/stress for your body.

That might be a point if removing toxins from the body were actual work, and not just the normal functioning of the body. It's no more work than taking a leak.

Yeah, that's the idea. But the idea is nonsense. See, you've got this organ in your body called a liver. Its job is to detoxify your body. If there's stuff in your body that your liver can't handle in relatively quickly, you've got bigger problems than pseudo-scientific holistic medicine can deal with.

I don't. I had my liver replaced with a lemon.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
an organic lemon.
It's more healthy and natural that way

Yeah, my girlfriend keeps insisting that she needs that ear candle bullshit for her son. I try to point out the purpose of ear wax and how it naturally cleans and protects the canal but...apparently some of his classmates have that done by their parents too so that means it must be a good idea.

Whadya gonna do? Some people are allergic to logic.

My primary care doctor went so far as to tell me not to even use Q-tips. His exact words were "Your body will get rid of it when it is supposed to".

I mean...I still wash my ears...but I don't go digging into my eardrums anymore.

Ear candling is a hoax, or the product of naiete. It doens't remove wax from the ear canal, so your girlfriend and her children can use them to her heart's content, and it won't make any more than a placebo's difference.

I'm not anti alternative medicine, I'm just anti completely unfounded claims about the benefits of doing something often silly.

I know that's true, but it just feels so good to do it. Next thing you'll tell me is that I shouldn't pick my nose.

You should only pick your nose whilst sitting in traffic or in a job interview.

Oh, and on first dates.

On a serious note, the only time I pick/clean the inside of my ear (this is gross, I know) is with my finger tip once the wax works it's way to the um.......ear butt. biggrin
