Forget the quintessential Vegas buffet, I've got a hunger that can only be satisfied by the Amish. That's right, a group of electricity-shunning, horse and carriage-driving, button-opposing Amish in Ohio have taken on a divine challenge of the highest order: to break the world buffet record for the most dishes served.

Organizers plan three two-hour sittings for 1,000 people each at $11 (€8.25) apiece at the Amish Flea Market. Proceeds will help feed the needy.

The nearly 600 promised dishes include Hungarian sauerkraut soup, corn casserole, garlic mashed potatoes and sweet potato souffle.

"We might not have glitz and glamour, but we know how to cook," said Kurt Kleidon, who is helping organize the event.

To celebrate their holy triumph over Sin City, rumor has it the Amish folk will party 'till dusk at a full blown buttermilk kegger...probably in a barn somewhere. Wet bonnet contests rule.

Well this makes more sense. For a second there I thought Hungary was trying to entice the Amish to move there.

I bet no matter what it wins in flavor hands down. Around these parts they sell baked goods at roadside stands, and I'm telling you nothing beats an Amish pie.

if the amish were secretly evil, they could kill two birds with one stone here and put arsenic in the food, thereby setting the world records for largest buffet and mass poisoning.

I've eaten a number of times at the Amish restaurants in Iowa, and it is a real treat. A lot of fresh vegetables, and great biscuits. All served in family style bowls on the table. They really do know how to cook. Desert is a whole nother fun episode. Bill Zuber's is my favorite.

We're smack in the middle of Pennsylvania Dutch country here . About 4 times a year , one of the local fire companies has a ox roast dinner . You can either eat in , or take home a container . The take home weighs about 5 pounds , no shit . Beef , gravy , dill potatoes , corn , sliced peaches , a little container of ice cream & a slice of cake . Hard to beat for sure . We're also near the Shady Maple smörgåsbord , another place where you can put on a serious feed bag if the need arises .

Oh man, Morgan and I are freaking out over the idea of world's biggest buffet.

One good thing about living in the tourism capital of the US is that we have AMAZING buffets.

i really do want to attend this. i love a buffet, and spent a pretty significant portion of my early, angsty adolescence plotting my escape to Amish country.

I live about an hour out of Amish Country. They can cook, and they can can food like no other population on the planet.

if there's one thing country folk continue to bring the world it's epic foodstuffs. i grew up next to an old doukhobor settlement and to this day i harbor an almost pavlovian response to borscht and pyrahi.

they make great food, furniture, and picnic tables.
but they need to come to terms with buttons. i think its time to embrace modern clothing fasteners.

Actually the Amish are quite OK with buttons, it is snaps they oppose. I personally think they were ahead of their time on that one, snaps suck!

I'm good friends with an amish family and let me tell you, their cooking abilities are second to none! You have not lived until you've tried their homemade potato chips!! mmmhmmm

Being predominantly Pennsylvania Dutch/German (also Cherokee, Irish & English),and an avid Lover of Food, this sounds great. I learned at an early age many Amish and other PD recipes and am always absorbing other styles and tips, so this is the shit.
