On May 5, 1993, three young boys, Chris Byers, Michael Moore and Stevie Branch, were brutally murdered in the town of West Memphis, Arkansas. Grieving and looking for answers, the town allegedly bypassed evidence pointing at probable suspects. Instead, they prosecuted three teenage boys who were unconventional for the town of West Memphis. The boys, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Miskelly, wore black and listened to heavy metal music. They would later come to be known as the West Memphis...

I wrote a paper about this during my first semester in college. I really hope the DNA test results will make a difference. frown

Great interview, Lily. It's a sad example of the politics behind justice.

Surely this is the most important interview in SG history. It's so crucial that the profile remains high on the WM3, it's a beacon for this kind of injustice.

Great interview Lily. The WM3 are this generation's Scottsboro Boys.

I hope they find some justice soon.

"LS: when will the DNA testing finally get done?

BS: That's something I don't know the answer to. The folks working on the case tell us things, but they don't tell us everything. We do know that the attorneys and investigators are very optimistic."

when i was basically working full time on this, the bite mark impression results were the biggest news we got. the dna testing was nowhere near close to being done. plus, the blood samples from the resturant were "lost". when i tried to get paradise lost played in small theaters and group events, doors were basically slammed in my face.

i had musician friends help spread the word on tours, and it spread like wildflowers. you don't know the feeling of optimism i get when i see someone walk by wearing a WM3 shirt...or when i wake up and see my old friend burk on the front page of SG...

it is depressing that they are still behind bars. the day i met damien in person, his spirits were so high and full of hope. that was a decade ago. a decade. the supporters from all over have done a wonderful job keeping this case alive. power of the internet. power of technology.

this interview inspired me to contact burk today. it's been years.

thank you, lily.

xoxo.

Here's to the great work that everyone behind WM3.org is doing. Being from small-town Arkansas, I know what it's like to be the different one, and just how much beyond justice that can take things. Fortunantly the spotlight on this case is getting brighter everyday, and, hopefully, someday soon, Jessie, Jason, and Damien will be experiencing life outside the walls of the Arkansas prison system.

Your interview is thefirst time I've seen anything about this case. I'm not surprised by this injustice--history as far back as you want to go is full of similar stories. It just seems incongruous that in this "enlightened" age such witch hunts and convictions still occur. Unfortunately, money and votes seem to mean more than truth and justice--even in our age. I always believed that education and science would overcome prejudice and injustice, but it seems closed mindedness and the herd instinct are stronger than intelligence. Keep up the fight. Maybe your victory will restore my faith in our society--possibly not a lot, but a little bit, anyway. smile

It's funny because just a few days ago I made a donation and got my WM3 t-shirt in the mail (which won't come off my back until it smells) and up goes this interview. Being a kid who was (and still is) looked at as strange because of my looks and beliefs, I always related to these guys, and it's scary to think how far this kind of prejudice can truly go. Thanks for the interview...the more this case stays in the spotlight, the more support they'll receive. Every little bit helps.

I don't understand how these people are still in prison given that there is (to my knowledge) no longer any conclusive evidence linking them to the crime. Surely it's illegal to detain people after the evidence against them has been invalidated?

I am very impressed with your involvement in the case Selket, Like i told you, If people like you didn't exist back then then this new generation of supporters would not exist today. I worry that the DNA testing, just like the bite mark impression evidence will be swept under the rug. It makes me furious to think the prosecutors even get to argue what relevance the DNA evidence has! but like you I think support is growing and I hope that justice will be served and they will be released.

Great Interview Lily!

We may think we live in the 21st Century . . where justice is purported to be blind and free of prejudice . . but all too often, you're only as free or equal as your local surroundings permit you to be. I have always believed that if the United States of America is, in fact, a single nation, then there should be only one set of laws, not 50, and there should be uniform due process. Its unsettling, for sure, to read an account such as this.

Your questions brought out the essence of this story, and your prologue made it an easy read.

You can be proud of your efforts!
