Another reason to envy our northern neighbor's attitude towards health care: Canada has just announced $300 million in nationwide funding for HPV vaccination:

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization has recommended that every nine- to 13-year-old girl in Canada should be vaccinated against the disease and that older girls and women should also be vaccinated, even if they are already sexually active, because they may not yet have been infected. . . .

"We have been recommending to the federal government that they fund the vaccine," said Gail Beck, the president of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada, who said the money, which will be paid in 2007-08, is enough to cover the cost of the vaccine across the country.

"The federation believes that this is the biggest breakthrough in women's health in many years."

I guess in Canada, healthy beavers are important.

Bitch_PhD would like Canada better if it weren't so cold.

That's not something to be thankful for, though. frown

Allow me to inject a note of cynicism here. This largesse from the Federal Government smacks like electioneering from Harper and his cronies. God, I hope this doesn't fool people into voting for this anti-Kyoto wingnut and the Tories.

Yeah... I hate to say it but this does stink of pandering. The Conservative government isn't exactly well known for its love of women or sexual health programs.

As much as I'd love to see this money spent I hope that this plan doesn't sway people to support the Conservatives. Bunch of douchebags.

That's great news. Too bad this didn't happen a bit earlier before I got infected and have to go to the hospital every 6 months for the next 2 years.

To be fair I think that sums up pretty much ALL politics.

But again, for you foreigners, Mr. Harper and his ilk are kind of like spineless, uncharismatic versions of Republicans.

You've never had to go through the NHS have you? While on paper, it's amazing, the sad fact is that's slowly grinding to an MSRA infected halt, mostly due to bureaucratic incompatency.

Funny...I was just reading a week or 2 ago how they had NO plans to fund it.

I'll believe it when the money starts funnelling down. I believe that my exact words to my mom were, "they'll fund Viagra/Cialis and the like, but a vaccine that will help protect women from getting cancer? The government's attitude is 'Fuck the women!' You can bet if it was a drug to help prevent prostate cancer that there would have been no debate, regardless of the cost."

Yay for Canada!
When NICE approves it for use in Britain, I might say I'm a virgin so I can get it. From what I've heard they're only giving it to people who aren't sexually active. Which I think is stupid...

Oh please. They're more like centrist Democrats, while the Liberals are like centre-left Democrats. For all the bluster of a few fringe members, they're basically the same party. When corruption seeps in and they get turfed, we'll be back with the Liberals, and when they're shown to be corrupt, we'll be back to the Tories, and so on and so forth, and the whole time, nothing will really change. This is the reality of Canadian politics.

Now I'm glad that I was a "weirdo" in high school for using condoms.
