Mexico City--not Mexico the country--is considering making abortion legal for the first trimester. Currently under Mexican law, abortion is only legal if a woman's life is endangered by her pregnancy, or if she's been raped. (Although, in fact, even if you've been raped, Mexican officials can and do try to deny your right to an abortion.)

Meanwhile, in Nicaragua, which recently passed a complete ban on abortion under any circumstances, the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights is challenging the law on constitutional grounds. A spokeswoman reports that

"We are following very closely the cases where women are dying." . . . activists plan to use the information in their case before the Nicaraguan Supreme Court and other international human rights bodies.

Before the Nicaraguan law, a woman needed the testimony of three experts that her life was endangered by pregnancy, and the consent of a family member.

Here at home, the Oregon bill requiring insurers to cover birth control that I blogged about earlier this week passed--with an exception for religious employers. With the context of what the Church has accomplished in other American countries in view, you can kinda see why that concession isn't exactly heartening news. Whatever happened to the idea that the state should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion"?

Its a choice just because its legal its not like everyone will go get one, its not like a HIP/COOL thing to do, its done when someone thinks they won't be able to care or a child, and yes there are other reasons that are selfish and and certain cases this right is abused.

But sometimes its true some people, can't give a child an environment it needs to grow up in, food, shelter, etc. especially in a place where the economy isn't swell.

We shall see...

Oh man, that's totally an awesome idea. Someone should write that into the Constitution!

Well, religion aside, even, the Oregon bill isn't exactly heartening overall in light of the situation right here in the US either--for example, the Eighth Circuit's recent decision in the Union Pacific case. Bully for you, Oregon, but that doesn't do shit as far as protecting access for the rest of us.

I've always wondered why the founding fathers didn't think of an actual name for the country. It's like Otto von Bismarck calling Germany the "United States of Europe."

No i meant it as in some women take it very lightly and use it as contraception method, (which i don't personally agree with)
