I find the fist a more fierce approach..."I'm doing it as hard as I can." Whereas the partially extended surrounding fingers leans towards the more casual of the bunch. A sort of..."eh, fuck you". Alas I have stubby little hands and can barely manage a fist of fury....I forever envy

I'm actually incapable of doing in Dave Grohl style (probably in more ways than this, but that's neither here nor there....) So, I actually prefer the rather casual, full-handed approach (all fingere extended, a quick thrust of the open hand into the air, palm facing me), as if saying "I'm flipping you the bird but I care about you so little that I'm not going to bother giving you the satisfaction of feeling like you actually got flipped off". Because it's all I can do. I think the non-Dave Grohl way is wussy, so I have to make up something else and then justify it.
