J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter book series, is suing eBay for allowing illegal and fraudulent copies of her works to be sold on the auction site. Rowling has managed to obtain an injunction which prevents eBay from listing illegal copies (namely e-versions) of her books, which is binding until a May 23rd hearing.

Not only is J.K. Rowling losing out from the auctioning of illegal books, but fans are also being hoodwinked and wasting their money.

Marjorie, Webmistress of the MuggleNet-affiliated collectors' advice site JKR's Army, was contacted by Neil Blair (Rowling's lawyer) who asked fans of the Boy Wizard to lend their support.

You can find more info here and the e-petition to sign here.

Does it make me a bad person if I don't care?

I wonder how many people who buy eBooks off eBay have also helped the nephew of a deceased Nigerian warlord launder his $millions inheritance through American banks.

I'll be a bad person with you if that's the case.

I don't think thats the point. The legal copies of her book aren't being taken off. I.E. I have a copy I don't want anymore in softback so I put it on ebay and you buy it. She doesn't HAVE an ebook so there's no guarantee that the eBooks being sold on ebay are the entire novel. (Thats a lot to type up). Sadly enough I know a few people who've been scammed by ebay. I've never been but I know others who've had to file with ebays complaint system that they never received products or they received severely damaged stuff or things that are missing items.

Oh and Thisiswhoweare is correct. You can just BitTorrent the audiobooks. Thats way easier and JKRowling isn't aware of it.

yep it isn't a matter of if she is rich or not.
I am writting a book and i will feel really pissed off if someone steals my rights and starts selling pirated books. that's not fair.
She is suing e-bay and she is in her own right.

Also the kids are the ones doing the petition, many of them had been tricked with bad copies or unoriginal ones for more or less the same ammount of money.

and well you dont have to sign the petition , so dont feel like "ha, i won't sign i'm such a badass" because you are not, you are just not interested.

and yeah sadly this is one of the things people don't care until they have the same problem.
Because if there are pirated books on e-bay you may find also many pirated things like clothes, watches, dvd's.... and not always they're going to work properly AND that's the problem.
