Good lord. Listen to this jaw-dropping speech by everyone's favorite nutso politican, Zell Miller:

Too many who believe as we do are hesitant to speak out, because they think they may offend someone.
....
How could this great land of plenty produce too few people in the last 30 years? Here is the brutal truth that no one dares to mention: we're too few because too many of our babies have beenkilled. Over 45 million since Roe V. Wade in 1973. If those 45 million children had lived, today they would be defending our country, they would be filling our jobs, they would be paying into Social Security.

Translation: killing embryos is bad because we need them to grow up into soldiers we can kill. Also, we want white workers, not those dirty Messicans.

He's right about one thing. Those are some pretty damn offensive things to say.

Bitch_PhD isn't too interested in breeding for the greater glory of the homeland, thanks anyway.

I think it was implied by the "filling our jobs" and "paying into social security" parts. At least, I would infer something along those lines. But I am a dirty lib... actually I'm moderate. But I still infer what Ms. Bitch was saying.

I think you'll have a hard time finding anyone particularly interested in claiming him at this point.

Clearly that's impregnable logic.

I do have to agree with Zell about one thing: it would be kind of cool if we could still challenge people to a duel.

huh. Thats quite the turn around for a guy who supported abortion rights and stem cell research when he was in office.

Yeah whats with the "white workers " crap. The guy doesn't have a very defined stance on imigration as far as i've heard. Do you have some reason for saying that or you just like inflamatory hate speech so much you wanted in on it ?

I'm not a fan of the guy, just sayin . . .

He attributed societal problems to rap music, and the lack of a Christian government. He's said all manner of racist stuff.

But I don't know anything specifically about Mexicans that he's said. Some direct links would have been nice.

And I too, wish we lived in more brutal, public bloodletting times.

While in office as governor, he changed his stance from pro-choice to anti-choice.

Yeah, I just love inflammatory hate speech.

Look, do we have a shortage of workers in the U.S.? No. No, we do not. Zell is saying we do. In fact, we've got a higher birth rate than most other developed countries--largely because of immigration. The only possible explanation for why Zell thinks "our" birth rate is a problem is that "we" don't include those damn immigrants. You know, the same ones who are taking "our" jobs.

I am so sick of opportunistic scumbags like this guy warping data to fit their own self serving agendas.

"How could this great land of plenty produce too few people in the last 30 years?"

Too few to sustain a system in which a small percentage benefit from the labor of the vast majority, perhaps. If the land is so plenty and we have fewer people living off of it, then why are more and more of the resources going to a smaller and smaller minority?

Last night in my city there were eight kids killed in a fire in a house in which 22 hardworking poor were heating their home with an old, electric space heater. Doesn't seem like underpopulation was at the top of their concerns, huh?
But I'm sure Miller's bummed about the eight less soldiers he'll get to send to the front lines to protect the status quo for fatcats like him.

Furthermore, I don't think any of these cynically righteous, right-to-life loudmouths should be allowed to address the subject until they've each adopted at least ten unwanted kids from the overflowing foster system and provided them with the love and care they say each child deserves.

Actually, Bitch_PhD makes perfect sense. Zell's base here is WASPy and leans toward fundamentalist. The racial inference he makes is almost but not quite explicit. He successfully dances around xenophobia without actually being directly racist (maybe he's not so senile, after all, since that's quite a trick). But there can't be any mistaking the context of his statements.

He says, "If those 45 million children had lived, today they would be defending our country, they would be filling our jobs, they would be paying into Social Security."

The "they" he's talking about are, mostly, the would-have-been children of white Americans since 1973, just by the numbers. By "defending our country", he means there would be a bigger supply of native-born (and mostly white) soldiers; by "filling our jobs", he means a bigger supply of native-born (mostly white) low-income earners; by "paying into Social Security", he means they wouldn't be illegal workers who bypass the Social Security system.

Does anyone really believe that's *not* what he meant? It is certainly possible to infer from his statement that he is religious, conservative, believes that women have a duty to reproduce, and that their children have a duty to die for this country in support of his agenda. That is, in two words, fundamentalist horseshit.

Bitch_PhD is right on the money.

The speech is about abortion.

He says "they would be filling our jobs, defending our country..." as in, contributing to the greater good that all people in society contribute to by being a part of it.
He does not say "they would be filling our jobs, defending our country..." as you and Bitch want him to.

Frankly, I don't see the need to put racist-y words into his mouth. His opinions on abortion are more than reprehensible enough for me all on their own.

I agree that Dr Bitch is spot on in pointing out the usual reasoning behind such a position. It's long been a standard of the right wing nationalists that the country in question should swell its numbers by having the right people produce lots of offspring. It goes hand in hand with the concept/fear of "degenerate races/cultures" out breeding their "superiors".

Growing populations are much more able to "defend" their nation around the world, as Mr Miller longs for.

I assumed that to mean:

Zell thinks all those babies should have been born so we wouldn't have a problem filling jobs.

If we had such a problem filling jobs that we need unwanted babies, why don't we let Mexican workers fill those jobs.

Judging from what I've seen of comments on Stockula, I'll take that as a compliment. People either really seemed to like Stock or really seemed not to... better than being tepid. Never crossed paths with him, though... ~f~
