I am watching this show right now and my goddam blood is boiling. Contestants are actually high-fiving and getting psyched over correctly answering questions intended for an elementary school student.

Yes...I realize that the whole POINT of the show is a joke...but I am not amused. It makes me sick.

Now...I'll bet that if I were given a comprehensive 100 question test on the subject matter...there's a good chance that I wouldn't get all 100 correct....but I certainly would whoop it up every time I got one right.

The way ignorance is celebrated in this country makes me oh, so sad.

I threw my drink at the screen when a contestant cheered because she got this question right:
"In Astronomy, which star is closest to Earth?"

Oh my effing god, is this guy seriously about to get $100,000 for knowing NA represents sodium on the periodic table?

I hadn't heard of it either until I saw this thread. Naturally I found it on Fox, the first place I checked.

This show reminds me of when Jay Leno used to do those street quizzes.

He'd ask questions like "What Country is above the united states?"

and people would answer "Mexico" and then laugh and say "i don't know".

It made me embarrassed. I didn't find it funny, i was just in awe.

By the time you're an adult how relevant is it to know what species of bear is the largest? They're celebrating because it's a game show and they're winning money, not because they're happy with being ignorant to useless information.

Ok I'll admit it, I'm only defending them because I didn't know all the questions as well. What constellation is the big dipper part of? Does it matter?

I find stuff like this and jaywalking encouraging, if anything. I realized a while back that if 90% of the TV-watching public didn't realize that these people were idiots, I wouldn't be watching it on TV. this ain't exactly the latest from jean-luc godard, this is jay leno. this is FOX. the only reason this stuff gets a slot is because the lowest common denominator knows that the sun is the star closest to earth, and everyone can laugh at the idiots.

ursa major, I think. I didn't google it, because I'd like to think I know more than a 5th grader.

It is, in fact, Ursa Major, which is adjacent to The Little Dipper (Ursa Minor), which despite its diminuitive name is the one with one of the brightest and most culturally important stars in the sky, Polaris, which is also the name of the wicked cool band that did the theme song to The Adventures of Pete and Pete.

Heck, and I skipped fifth grade!

if your fifth grade was anything like mine, all you missed was a year of abject fucking misery. we sure didn't learn any constellations.

My boss and the person who signs my paycheck didn't know the answer to this. I'm beginning to think that underachieving my way through life was the wrong choice.

I actually saw that part. The most ridiculous thing was when before she answered, it became the "cliffhanger" going into the commercial break. The host said, "which star is closest to the Earth?.... and we'll find out the answer right after these commercial messages".

As you can guess, I was holding my breath through the entire commercial break to find out what the answer was!

I happen to KNOW that I am probably dumber than a fifth grader so I would be high-fiving everyone for weeks if I even made on that show.

That's exactly why The Big Dipper is not a constellation, it's an asterism. Oh, and this thread exhibits one of the many reasons I don't watch TV.
