Boston has some serious issues. Lately officials keep blowing things out of proportion, assuming the city is littered with bombs.

A suspicious device was blown up downtown Wednesday, shutting down parts of the Financial District. But what brought morning commuters to a standstill wasn't an explosive, and may not be dangerous at all.

The "device" turned out to be a traffic counter put out by the transportation division.

Congrats, Boston Bomb Squad! Especially for the numerous videos chronicling your [dumb] efforts.

Now, it's understandable you want to protect your citizens, but you clearly haven't learned from your mistakes.

Maybe we should designate the last day of every month this year as "Boston thinks something's a bomb day"! Who wants to place their bets on what March's device really is?

Do they think terrorists would chain their little bomb to a sign post and use a giant shiny lock to keep people from STEALING their bomb or something? What the fuck? Or that terrorists would just, ya know, put it out in plain sight where anyone who isn't blind could see it?

Are they trying to prove something? Or did they find out this wasn't their street departments counter and thought, lets do the bomb thing again and get some money from these guys too.

Make sure you don't forget your boombox anywhere in Boston, it might get blown up.

My guess for march is a backpack a kid left at a bus stop when he got on the bus. To make it good lets say the backpack has a handheld game and a cell phone in it.

If there's any real bombs left in Boston in the near future, it'll probably be left by bomb squad members in an effort to redeem themselves from all this recent stupidity.

I don't think that they were stupid. It's an unknown device, with no clear markings, as far as I can see from the postage stamp sized photo. They did the right thing by blowing it up.

The stupidity lies in the people who laid the device. It should have clear markings so that the bomb squad can contact the owner to verify that it is not a bomb.

Of course, if the box does have clear markings, that would alter my assessment of the situation.

To clarify my position, imagine that 9/11 could have been prevented, but someone did not act, because they were worried about being embarrased if they made a mistake. How would you write that up as a news piece?

(That's not "you" in the sense of a dig at the author of this news article, but a question for whoever is reading this comment).

And then, they blow the kid up too. He wasn't actually a human, he was a robot bomb designed to look like a child. Them terrorists are gettin' tricky, ya know.

Actually, if people in Boston and other places had followed policies already in place, it would have been prevented.

But, to my real point, for MetaTag, in this country we have things called phones (or this fancy internet we're on) that departments and people can use to call each other and tell them about things their departments are doing. biggrin

On top of that, is this the first traffic do-dad ever put up in Boston? And do you think the traffic folk have some contact info or do not tamper this is a traffic do-dad painted on that thing somewhere? I'm guessing so.

I'm afraid this has to go in the fucking moron category again. 3 for 3, Boston!

thank you! someone gets the point.

i've tried to explain this to so many people, and they all keep going back to 9/11...

this really has nothing to do with 9/11. the boston bomb squad needs to be trained a lot better. that's the sad, but true fact of the matter.

To be fair, now that I think about it, those traffic monitoring boxes would be a good way of disguising a real bomb.

Maybe the city of Boston should start issuing stickers for advertisers and traffic research firms to label their things "Not a Bomb".

Mind you, wouldn't it be clever to put a "not a bomb" sticker on a bomb? Post Modern Terrorism!
