Eve Online...

it's almost entirely PVP oriented, with just enough PVE to make it worth playing, and it's graphically amazing.

The developers call it a "sandbox game", because they baiscally just created the game environment, and let hte players play however they'd like.

Yeah, so, I'm not really clear from your original post why you have a problem with WoW. They have a free trial and you can download it for free. You should probably just do that.

Free? Really? This'll make unemployment fly by! As long as I can get some wireless signal from the alley behind the Howard Johnsons.

For ten days. Of course, you're addicted by then.

I've had a lot of fun with Guild Wars, that's one of those online games where the fun is more community over content I think. It's also free after you buy it - that doesn't suck!

You can't really be all "I can do anything!" in it.. but I've been contemplating getting back into Planetside. That game is the most fun I've had playing in a guild. Is there anyone here who still plays it?

Seconding this. There's no real cap on character progression, and you can do just about anything. Noob life sucks, but if you can tackle the learning curve (it's steep) you'll find that there is much fun to be had.

Most games have a free trial, try as many as you can before you pick one. IT really sucks to get 6 months into a character and realize "wow, this game reallys sucks".

No doubt. My old guild from EQ2 bounces around from game to game for that reason exactly.

I miss eq2 =(
