Hmmm not sure about this breeding for trends sake issue, Oh and Tigers have never been a part of indiginous African wildlife!

Sid said: RudieCantFail and BrokenandHostile you guys can't honestly tell me you never saw some new doodad and said "Oooooo I want that!" in your entire life? I mean, I know I can only speak for myself, but I'm thinking a lot of these "I want one"s in this thread are just that, so don't get all bent out of shape.
In the broad scheme of things, it's more likely that the lot of us adopt a cat from a shelter than buy one of these $400-$3500 cats.
I, myself, am a proud kitty momma. I adopted my cat as an 8-week old kitten from a shelter. She was found in an abandoned house in a cardboard box that was taped shut. So I am an owner of a rescued cat, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
So just because the majority of the posts in this thread are "I want one!" doesn't mean that we would all rather buy one of these over-priced pure-breds than rescue an animal from the shelter. I think we're all just expressing our love for the cuteness that is a toyger here.
Yea, i can't argue that i am all about doodads, and hopping on the bandwagon about buying things. But they're doodads. Like MP3 players and stuff like that. Things that when i get bored with them, i can sell them on e-bay or just toss in the trash.....unlike cats.
And i understand that the good majority of people here are just oohing and ahhing at the pretty pussy, but it kind of hits a sore point with me. I devote time to a local animal shelter, and i see good, kind animals go without a home because they aren't designer or they're out of their puppy or kitten stage and aren't adorable. I also see people turn in pets on a daily basis with excuses like "It was more than i bargained for", like they never even researched the pet before buying it.
I eventually have to watch these animals, with their individual quirky personalities i get to know, get euthanized, which makes it all that much harder to volunteer time.
They are really cute and I assume i will eventually see one of these guys pass through.
Thank you though for taking the time to go look at your local shelter before buying a brand new cat, i appreciate that!!!

This is one of those things that make you wonder why scientists haven't cured cancer or AIDS yet. It's weird to think that the big accomplishment in their life, instead of doing something to help mankind, was developing a cool house pet.
How do you know the scientists involved in this were even qualified to help cure AIDS or cancer?
It was just a comment, similar to the part in Idiocracy where they said scientists, instead of spending their time fixing the world's problems, were more concerned with preventing hair loss and providing longer erections. Without using smiley faces or whatnot to express the tone, I think some of it gets lost. Mostly I just had a thought in the back of my mind where a kid interested in science is at some weird Scientist's Job Fair, and is enticed by the hipness of making baby tigers instead of hanging with the nerds at the cancer table.
I do understand that not everyone is qualified to do that kind of research.
As for my big life accomplishment: I'm twenty four. It's a bit early to call that.
Like I said, it wasn't a serious comment, especially considering that it was bookmarked with two humorous statements (the Monty Python reference I lost out on due to slow typing, and then the part about a scientist holding a housecat in front of a tiger for the sexing).
I need to know what happened to all the mishap cats along the way to developing the breed.
"Oh, this little fella is really, really cute but he behaves just like a real tiger. He'll go straight for your throat while you're sleeping and rip out your jugular. If you have a baby he knows that the baby is vulnerable and will single it out from the rest of the family."

Yes, this interbreeding process so people can have cats with a certain style of coat produces all sorts of offshoot mongrels that don't make the cut, and while some breeders will see that they are placed in homes that will care for them, some don't, and they end up destroyed or discarded. These aren't pets, they're lifestyle accessories, and there are plenty of pets you can adopt for $40, rather than paying $2000 so your kitty can look like a tiger.
Just waiting for the day people want children with naturally tiger-striped hair.
