Last month, Norwich, Connecticut substitute teacher Julie Amero was convicted of showing pornographic images to her seventh-grade students from a school computer—putting a new spin on that age-old classroom activity of "show-and-tell."

Amero claims she used the Kelly Middle School computer to e-mail her husband, left to use the loo and later returned to find the students gathered around the screen, feasting their eyes on a Web site about hairstyles which then became flooded with pornographic pop-ups of adult couples doin' the nasty. According to the Associated Press, the scandalous sub blames the pop-ups on "pornographers' unseen spyware and adware programs."

“I’m scared,” said Amero, 40. “I’m just beside myself over something I didn’t do.”

“I did everything I possibly could to keep them from seeing anything,” she says.

Prosecutor David Smith contended at Amero’s three-day trial that she actually clicked on graphic Web sites.

Several students testified that they saw pictures of naked men and women, including at least one image a couple having oral sex.

Amero's sentencing is scheduled for March 2nd and, if her conviction stays put, she could be looking at 40 years in prison.

How the hell doesn't that school have a content filter? Jesus, you can't even log in to accounts on sites like Yahoo! on our school computers, let alone browse porn sites.

Last I heard, she was appealing the conviction. A consulting company that was retained by the defense to examine her surfing history said that they were kept from presenting all the evidence they found in the case, and if they were permitted to present their findings, she would be acquitted.

FORTY YEARS?!? That's retarded. I don't think she should get forty years if she shows them a snuff film and pauses it to explain the particularly gory bits.

Prison??

what goes on.

All teachers should be shot. All they want is to corrupt kids. I say let the computers teach kids. Or television. They'd like that a lot more than some child molester enforcing rote memorization.
Dirty fuckers, another brick in the wall, all that shite.

See now I feel silly, because I don't want to seem like I'm parroting the previous comments, but seriously-- 40 years? I'm pretty sure I could kill somebody without getting 40 years.

Also, not for nothing, but is there really any chance that someone in that group of seventh graders had not seen porn before? It's 2007. If you're in the seventh grade and you've never seen porn, your parents should have their picture up someplace. Billy Graham's kids probably looked at porn before the seventh grade.

What you mean 40 years? That woman has destroyed the lives and tarnished the souls of those poor innocent children who were otherwise destined to remain pure until the day they got married, and the corruption they have been submitted to has no remedy whatsoever, because everyone knows that no kid ever in the history of the world had ever seen nude images of people without growing up to become rapists.

Grab thy forks and let her burn!

I remember long ago in a far off land I was in a history class and we were working on our reports on the computer. Thinking the best place to find out about the government, I went to whitehouse.com. The teacher magically popped up behind me at that time. Not a good deal for me and my computer privilege. Not that this has anything to do with that, but porn can pop up at school and yes sometimes it isn't your fault.

HAHA. Wonder if the prosecutor had to cancel it with the court reporter to keep from being rebilled...

Apparently they did have one, but they hadn't installed the latest update so it didn't have a current blacklist.

This whole thing is such an amazing load of crap.

Oh I completely agree, society would be so much better off without a comprehensive education system. What do we even need it for? People should be able to figure shit out on their own! It obviously worked for you; I mean just look at the rational response you came up with to this article.

I imagine that 40 years is just the maximum that the law allows, rather than what she's getting. Puritanism is corrupting, but something tells me that that won't work as a defense.

My town center has a statue of a 7' naked man and 12' horse (which is clearly a boy horse), what are the odds that Norwich, Connecticut doesn't sport similar works of art?

From what I understand, and how the legal analyst on the news explained it, the 40 years is the number they get when they add up the maximum number of years if they charged her separately for every sudent that viewed the images. The analyst also said that no way in hell would she ever get even close to that.

Now if the website in question was this I might understand the 40yrs wink

Just out of curiosity, what is the average sentence for someone who actually molests a child? I have a feeling it is a lot less than 40yrs.

Take a long drink and relax. The American criminal justice system is weird in many ways, but 40 years for accidently, even negligently, showing porn to kids is not real. The writer probably is citing to a state law with 40 years as the max. May be true, but no way any judge would award it.
And, of course, the case never should have been brought, probably.

This is just fucked up. So because a few kids who already no about fucking if not participating directly see a few images at school on here comp that they should by alrights be no where near she gets 40 years in prison.

How about a reality check here some ppl really need to be shot and removed from the gene pool and from what I have seen it seems to be all the wrong ones.

The jury should have found her innocent. The judge should have thrown the case out. The office of the prosecutor should never have pursued a conviction. The jackass parents who called the cops should have called the principal instead. The permanent teacher shouldn't have let the kids use the computer unsupervised. The person responsible for keeping school computers secure should have done his job in the first place.

The whole situation is ridiculous. Everyone involved should be spanked severely.

Including the kids that ratted her out.

People are too busy trying to protect other people from themselves. I think it's funny that the kids were all crowded around the screen, like gnats around a lightbulb. Idiots! Grownups know that kids are always trying to get a look at porn. 40 years? I think that's ridiculous...
