I feel the same way about the weird Christmas "toys" that Hallmark sells--dancing Santas and reindeer and such. The commercials always show how neighbors are brought together, or grumpy kids waiting for delayed flights in crowded airports are suddenly made cheerful by them. It's so perplexing to me.

Oh me too. So strange.

Brilliant article. Those stuffed toys are frightening and ridiculously non-classy all at the same time.

You're so right in saying "If you would not buy that wonderful gift on February 15th then don't buy it at all."

I believe flowers can be cute - as long as you don't only give them on Valentine's.

Agree with all in your brilliant article Cherry. I don't know why exactly, but the commercialisation of the Idea of LOVE, is far more hideous than Christmas and others. It just makes me puke puke puke

I'm all alone this year, so nothing much to do except ride out and ignore all the sodding sickness that this society has permeated into our hearts and minds.

When I was with my longest love, we made things for each other and cooked together, and just did things that in any small way made us feel connected. This was just natural and obvious to us. And we did this anyway on other days as well, as the idea of just expressing love to each other on only one allocated day in a year just seems preposterous!

But I guess a lot of people are just sheep, and very lazy, hence so much money is made by so many companies. After all with every shop screaming at you to "buy this or your relationship will die", and equally to single people "you are unloved and irrelevant, get used to it", many people are so submerged into their automatic routine of life, that the idea just doesn't seem to even occur to them that they can just do something special and homemade for each other. It's like we are brainwashed to think we need to spend lots of money or we don't care? They just wander in dazzled and hypnotised by the "stuff"... exchange their money for any old tat without any thought of what that really would mean to someone, and go home.

Once, my girlfriend gave me an interesting shaped twig she found on the way home for V-day, and customised it for me to make it personal. I still have that twig! It was the sweetest thing ever to me. smile

This is the third Valentine's Day in a row I've spent working for fucking Hallmark. It always amazes me how so many people get visibly upset and frustrated if they cannot find cards to do the speaking for them. It almost pains me to see how little thought gets put into the things people buy for those they love.

Awesome story, one of my favorite feature pieces I've read in a while. Loved (no pun intended) the pictures and captions. I do have to say though that many gift card stores on this side of the Atlantic far outdo the one shown above. Americans can beat most everyone when it comes to the tacky. And guys it isn't really that hard to write some original words to the woman of your heart, I mean if you like her there almost is never a wrong way to say it. And if you just have to spend a lot of money, remember this, all material things can be lost, stolen, destroyed or forgotten, but a memory of a special evening (or getaway trip) with someone you care about lasts forever, no matter what happens in the future.

funny shit !! i completely agree with the idea of not doing what you wouldn't normally do. a one-day celebration of romance and/or love is just silly. maybe it should be turned into "strange day", when you try to seduce the person you've always been curious about doing, but weren't quite sure you could tolerate in the long run. biggrin

I like Jim Gaffigan's bit about greeting cards:

"That looks like something I'd say."

"Hey, I got you this card. I spent 30 seconds picking it out. Hope you like it!"

'Cause there's nothing like mall chocolate and a card to show someone that you care.
