This was some of the funniest pieces of documentary television I have ever seen. It was on you tube in a matter of seconds.

The cast from the UK tv show Tog Gear get challenged to drive though the state of Alabama with the intention of drawing attention to themselves as much as possible in beat up American cars.

It works a little too well and I'm not too sure it's going to be a great help to Alabama's tourist trade.

So funny and yet...so sad.

I know it was done to be antagonistic & exploitive but I never would have thought that such relatively mild behavior could raise that much ire.

I mean...it wasn't like they wrote "Allah Akbar" & "Death to Infidels" on the side of their vehicles...they made fun of country music & NASCAR and trumpeted man-love & Hillary Clinton.

The most I'd have expected would be a lot of middle fingers, "fuck you"s and "Go home, Yankee". I know there are good people in the deep south...but the backwards-ass mountain people in this video make them all look bad.

I think the smart people who watched that over here are unlikely to generalise an entire state on just seeing that. The ones that do ? Well, probably not the best people to send you guys anyway.

Besides that throwing rocks at Clarkson is not something a lot of people over here would frown upon anyway. We may even suggest it as an sport for the next Olympics ?

I think that you could do similar experiments in other locales and get similar results.

I think it was the neon pink headlights and voluptuous girly fonts that did it. biggrin

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

But seriously when they needed jump leads I felt like I was watching a horror movie.

Rural locales, sure. It's not like Alabama has a monopoly on rednecks.

I watched this last night and laughed so hard at the entire episode that I hurt today. I almost did myself an injury. It was pure, pure genius.

Doesn't have to rural, really. Check out the Italian soccer riots, or Brits "bottling" bands at festivals.

Dumbasses like throwing shit everywhere.

yep, i was actually holding my breath when the jump leads came out at the petrol station...

a little aside, i was pretty non-impressed when jeremy strapped that dead cow on top of his car... i know it wasn't killed specifically for the show, but it was too much bad-taste for moi...

Rural locales don't have a monopoly on stupid. I'm sure there are quite a few neighborhoods in most large cities where I wouldn't write "Rap Music Sucks" on the side of my car and drive through, any more than I would write "Mullets are Stupid" and drive through the trailer park.

For some reason I enjoyed the added bit of the "Road to Perdition" soundtrack.

This was by far one of my favorite episodes. It was just surreal to see Jeremy Clarkson, in my hometown, standing on Calle Ocho trying to buy a car at some of the same crappy dealerships I've bought both of mine in.

I don't know how much of this is on YouTube, but the whole episode really is worth watching, some of the best stuff they've ever done. The last bit on Hurricane Katrina was particularly on point.

"How can America sleep knowing this is here?"

That was really powerful for me. I really didn't expect that.

So... they got honked at a couple times, yelled at once, and a couple rocks were thrown at their car? Talk about taking blood from a stone; they made pretty mild abuse look like Deliverance.

Is it any surprise that if you go to a place with a homogenous culture and mock that culture, people are going to be mad? Is it any wonder that people consider the entertainment industry to be arrogant and condescending? "Look at the backwards behavior of these ignorant, savage peasants. Disgraceful!"

This doesn't seem savage and disgraceful to you? confused surreal

Not that such intolerance is contained to Alabama. I've seen some pretty scary and disgusting things in football stadiums in Europe, and I'd be scared for my life in some of those crowds, but it is what it is.
