I really hope they looked into why she wasn't going to school. My wife has a cousin who didn't go to school for weeks because her mom wouldn't bring her. If it was just the girl being stupid, I hope she still had to do the social work when she get's done serving her two weeks of hard time.

Looking at the content of the article itself, it doesn't appear that there is much to discuss. The article is rather short and doesn't have a lot of specifics. I really think that it is a popular culture story more than anything at all.
I researched the article and its source. I do have the advantage that I could go to the original sources (as I am German and managed to go to school often enough to read and write the language ...).
The article simplifies the actual events. The quotes are translated wrong. In short the article is not accurate! This is not SG's fault as all the English sources I could find were simply copies of eachother and SG simply copied one of them.
Germany does have a juveline judical system as well. As far as I can tell the general judical system in Germany is not as harsh as the U.S. system. Soon a terrorist will be released after doing only 25 years for good conduct and showing remorse (she says she is really sorry but still does not disclose details on the at least three assassinations she was involved in).
P.S.: Funny thing that the discussion sidetracked to the proper use of English in a quote translated from German - and incorrectly at that! LOL!
Just before I start, if I make mistakes, don't even bother. I hate when the discussion evolves around how things are said rather then what is actually said. This kind of "I'm right, you're wrong and I'll prove it with every little insignificant detail" is really not my thing. Now.
I'm baffled by the lack of imagination going here. I thought this was a place of counter-culture but it seems more just sub-culture. People dress differntly yet copy all the same values they grew up to hate.
I'm sure many of you at least once in your life thought about these two words put together: "Fuck school" or maybe even "Fuck work". At least once. And are you all saying when someone actually acts upon those? You decry it to cover your own lack of action. To cover your own shame of not being able to act so freely. I for one support her courage and determination in deciding for herself what is right for her at that perticualr time and place.
Someone mentioned it. Maybe she had pretty damn good reasons for acting like this. And maybe she didin't too. But you're almost all descrediting her based on the fact that "it's the law". Wow. As if laws were made for our own good. They are put in place by a very select group of people. I doubt they're all in everyone's best interests.
You've all fallen in line. You've all chosen the values of a dead christianity and are making sure everyone obeys them. Face it. There is not only one way to live. That girl might not act as you would, but that's no reason to exert even more control over her.
Anyways, I mus've been wrong from the start to think I'd find difference in a website. After all, we're all just staring at a screen...

Man... there's just so much I want to say right now, but I'm just gonna try and keep it to one thing.
It's going to fucking school. It's not voting. It's not military service. It is 100% to her benefit and it is compulsory. There is no logical reason why this girl should be applauded for skipping school for no good reason for weeks at a time. None at all. She refused to man up and do what EVERYONE ELSE does as a matter of course. As a rite of passage to be a member of society. Would I be an object of praise because i "broke the chain" and skipped work for a month because i Just Didn't Feel Like Going? No, because I'm a fucking responsible adult, and bills have to get paid, so I HAVE TO go to work. I recognize that responsibility and I deal with it. And then, she was given a chance to make things right by doing community service, she promised to do it, and then she just couldn't be bothered. Where is the brave stand that you seem to want to apply to her? It doesn't exist. You can attack the actions of the state. I wouldn't agree with it, but at least you'd have some ground to stand on. But to attempt to assert that the girl was in the right? That's just ridiculous.
School is the first step in learning to obey orders. If you liked school, you'll love work! In school, you don't really learn anything besides how to learn...in a certain way. Not all forms of intelligence are valued by the western teaching methods and in fact, some are even repressed. Emotional intellect for example, is not one that's overly discussed in the current school system.
So what if this way of learning did not suit her in the first place? As said, not many bothered to wonder what had caused her to act like this in the first place. What if she got raped by fellow classmates, or even a teacher? Not all victims have the courage to be open about such acts and she might have gone out to find other ways of escape, literally. But that's just all speculation and fantasy. I have no clue what actually made her do this. But I for one would like to hear her story first before aproving any sentence reported on German websites.
Also, not everyone, as you state, act like you do. There many untold stories about dropouts and ex-workers who live totally more exciting lives than you and I live. But of course, there'll never be a reality show to tell you about those! Imagine the efect on the population! Read about Rimbaud's life for example. And yes, some of us would think very highly of you if you didn't show up to work for the next month. Just probably not the same people you usually hang out with. Maybe you wouldn't be held as a "hero", but you'd sure be a good ally, and a friend. There are other ways to organize our lives in order to get what we need to survive besides getting a job and obey rules, sets of values and conventions. You'll need to get rid of layers and layers of conformity that have been applied to your mindset from the day you were born. Let your imagination and trust in life burst and create new worlds!
To all, I'm sorry this is turning into a two-way debate. I also hate those. Please feel free to act as if I were speaking directly to you too. I like being criticised because I never know what details others will pick up from what I said. I also like receiving thumbs up when they are due. Although I doubt I'll get any around here.
So basically, we're all too quick to judge and I recognize a cry for freedom when I hear one. That's my opinion. Fuck I hate myself for not having the guts to take the leap. I feel like I'm waiting for the right time when I know exactly that there'll never be a right time but now. I'm such a lazy bastard.

You're such a rebel! You're really plugged in, and man, you just seem to have the world so FIGURED OUT!
Fuck I hate myself for not having the guts to take the leap.
As near as I can tell, your criticism of both the system and those of us who commented in the thread is a direct result of that quote. Stop taking it out on us!
You're right Vestril. That's what I like about receiving criticism. You never know from where the next hit is gonna come from. I thank you for it and I'll ponder upon it for a while, and I mean this with no perverse hypocrite sarcasm. Really.
I think my original intent with this sentence was to voice a feeling some might feel and repress all too often. Taking the leap. Feeling and knowing that life really could be much different if we acted instead of reacted. I don't know, maybe other people will recognize their own guilt they feel. I just hope they won't stop at feeling guilty, as I do, and start doing things they actually want to. But that's a long shot, especially through internet forums. Oh, and it's also good in debating to acknowledge your own weaknesses.
Wait, I do something I really want to. I take pics of live bands for free. I'm leaving the market out of my art by making it available to anyone who cares. And that's something I'm kinda proud of. Although now many people understand my motivations, but that's OK.
Still I can't believe how many people were down with this prison thing. Makes me wish we were back in 2000 when debates were about "people" vs "power" instead of "everything-we-stand-for" vs "terrorists".
