Thankfully, my wife abhors romantic comedies so I am not subjected to them. That being said, though I share her abhorence of modern romantic comedies, I highly enjoy old romantic comedies from the 60s/70s when there was actual comedy included (recently saw What's New Pussycat and loved it). Then again I also love romantic comedy manga (mostly the shoujo stuff) as well as Japanese romantic comedies.

Maybe the problem is that most American romantic comedies just aren't very good? Many seem to focus on the Romance (and create unreal and unhealthy ideas about relationships) and do a piss-poor job on the Comedy (anyone who thought that Little Black Book was a comedy is a sadistic bastard).

Last good American romantic comedy I saw was Roxanne with Steve Martin back in the 80s.

I love movies in general, i do own "chick flicks". A guy friend and i went to see She's The Man in the theater w/o any girls. I'll love romantic comedies and romance movies too. When i'm alone i will cry, if someone is around i can hold it in. Hell i got teary eyed when Jean Grey changed into Dark Phoenix.

Oh, I'll admit it; I like some romantic comedies and I'll even enjoy a good tear jerker from time to time (although the things that have any chance of getting the old water works of mine to go off seem to be different than other people; but oh well). I don't usually advertise this fact, of course, but its the truth *shrugs*

I don't generally like romantic comedys. The last one I remember actually watching to completion & enjoying was Matchmaker with Denis Leary & Jeanine Garofalo.

I have a "No Sandra Bullock" clause in my contract.

I personally hate chick flicks. I refuse to watch the Notebook, the Break Up, anything starring Richard Gere or Julia Stiles etc. Horror movies-- always. Prefer brilliant movies above all though.

me too.
unfortunately i have seen the notebook and let me tell you, it's painful.

I don't know why Rom-Coms are automatically called "Chick Flicks." Shit, The Apartment is one of the all time great movies, and I have never found anyone of any sex who doesn't like it.

yeah, but the apartment was made back when rom coms were actually often both funny and romantic.

show me a modern romantic comedy that holds a candle to the philadelphia story and the like.

Well, the Philadelphia Story is setting the bar pretty damned high, but Moonstruck, Groundhog Day, Bull Durham, There's Something About Mary, Clueless, High Fidelity and Say Anything are all pretty good romantic comedies.

High Fidelity's the only romantic movie I've seen that acknowledges that romance comes and goes, even with the same person. Brilliant flick.

I also recommend the Tao of Steve and Love, Actually.

I haven't seen any chick flick in the past few years that i liked.. or even wanted to see for that matter. They're just as stupid and formulaic as blatant 'guy' movies. I'll admit to liking When Harry Met Sally.. that was a great flick. Meg Ryan was cute as a button back then. Other notable exceptions include:

Amelie
Fried Green Tomatoes
.. others i'm sure, but i can't think of any more.

Oh, since when is "Amelie" a Chick Flick? Pzzaj.

The last one I remember really liking was Must Love Dogs.

That's what I was going to ask. I guess there is a love story there, but I don't think it takes up the entire movie.

Man I love Amelie.
