Wow is right:
"Wow, this takes forever to boot."
"Wow, this interface is slow."
"Wow, this OS takes up a lot of space."

I'm on a 2.53 Ghz machine with 1GB of RAM and it's slooooooow. Anyone else have this piece of shit loaded yet?

Why the fuck did you buy a new OS before it had been out for at least a year?

That's what I was thinking. I have a free upgrade on it's way to me, but I have no plans to install it any time soon. XP works perfectly for me 99.9% of the time. Someone is going to have to give me a damned good reason to go through the hassle of installing a new OS.

Seriously? This logic makes sense to you Windows people? The mind scrabbles. surreal

I mean, considering most of the reviews I've read of Vista have boiled down to "Meh. Not that much new stuff, no real compelling reason to upgrade for most users," it doesn't surprise me that there would be such a hesitation, I just come from a world where people are chomping at the bit to install a new OS because (shock and awe) there's compelling new stuff in it. *shrug*

I guess the fact that it's a "hassle" to upgrade the OS probably also plays a role in the hesitation.

It's not a huge ordeal or anything. But it's more effort than I am willing to put in for little return, and the chance of having problems. But I understand what you're saying. And I can't afford a mac. I couldn't afford this laptop when I bought it.

Who said I bought it?
I'm a programmer in a company with an MSDN subscription and they needed someone to make sure one of our apps works in Vista. I'm also the systems guy here, so I got to be the Guinea Pig.

I sure as fuck was not going to pay money for it, especially before SP1 is released. At least I was smart enough to install it on a separate partition so I can just blow it away and not have fucked up my workspace.

Eventually all new games will use DirectX 10.

Microsoft has insured that DirectX 10 will only work with Vista.

Resistance is futile, all serious users will eventually upgrade to Vista, like it or not. It is just a matter of time.

I'm kind of worried for the guys at Microsoft, eventually with enough market saturation your product will be used by some really crazy people.
When those crazy people find out that a bunch of the files they owned got DRM baleeted out of existence by Vista, (an operating system that thinks it has more rights to what you do on your computer than you do) they might just go nuts and start killing Microsoft employees. tongue

Operating systems don't need features. They're there to - suprise, suprise - operate the fucking system. All those added features are other goddamn programs that are bundled with your operating system - AND NOT PART OF THE OPERATING SYSTEM ITSELF. The big hastle of updating windows for me is spending that hour searching around for all the new added features so I can turn the damn things off.

Who, the fuck, gets a faster processor and new video card in order to upgrade the OS - that's called buying a new computer. I hate how all of those mac vs PC commercials are blatant lies.

They're not all blatant lies, and in fact the one I posted has been mentioned by many, even die-hard Windows users as painfully true.

Also, the majority of computers in use today (all but those released in the last couple years, less for budget machines) will need video card and memory upgrades to take full advantage of Vista, i.e. the Aero Glass interface. The same thing happened when XP came out.

Granted, you could also argue that the 6 major releases Apple has produced between XP and Vista requires the same amount of upgrades to run properly. That is, when you're provided with an update path at all.

Well, i don't know about Windows, but when Apple introduces Leopard (the next Mac OS), for example, it's going to be fully 64-bit. That's a feature of the OS. It's also going to have (built into the OS) multiple desktops (they call them "spaces"). In the past, prominent features of the OS like the graphics engine and core technologies that allowed interoperation between applications and made application development easier were rolled out. Those are OS features.

Sure, both Apple and Microsoft roll out dozens of new applications and utilities with each major system release and call them OS features just because they're applications bundled with the OS, but that doesn't mean operating systems don't have features.

By the way, why are you getting so worked up over this? Your comments come across like someone who is incredibly stressed out or strung out on caffeine or something.

Basically (and I have no idea if this is actually true, I'm just translating geekspeak) SPS is saying that Vista will nuke the files on your hard drive that it deems to be in violation of some kind of digital rights management (DRM) belonging to god knows who.

Do you have a source for that? I've heard that it takes over your hardware if it decides that you are in the process of pirating something, but I haven't heard anything like what you're saying, which sounds like a whole lot of suck.

drm? aerowhatsit? the first thing I did when I got xp was find the setting that made it look exactly like '98. xp works beautifully (after a few service packs and security patches, of course), and I can't figure out exactly what microsoft is selling me in vista that I don't already have.
