Ok i'm starting to get nervus now, I received a cut in the inside of my lip about 3 days ago (don't ask how becuase I don't know how either) anyway even though I wouldn't sleep on that side for the past two days when I've waken up and my lip (where the cut is) would be swollen, the swelling goes down after about 2 hours. It also hurts all day, Its a sharp pain and it's hard for me to eat and drink and at times hurts when I talk, I looked in the mirror and I looks like a tiny crater around the cut and inside that crater it has an "off white" coloring to it. Will it heal in time or do I have to worry about this and go to the doctor? shocked

I call dibs on his stereo.

But seriously, if it doesn't get better, just go and see a doc.

You'll be all right. It will be sore like a bitch for a few more days. Then it will heal.

Eating sugary foods will make it worse.

That sounds like a canker sore. It's not unusual to get them if you bite the inside of your mouth or cut yourself. It hurts like a motherfucker for a few days to a week, then goes away.

Scabs inside the mouth are white, because they are wet all the time. It happened to me all the time when I had braces.

Don't eat or drink anything salty or acidic for a few days, use a mouthwash to kill nasty bacteria that might infect it, and you'll be fine in a few days.

It's also possible it's a cold sore or canker sore. Same rules apply.

indeed. try rinsing your mouth out with saltwater or diluted hydrogen peroxide if you don't want to go straight to mouthwash... either way, you'll notice that the pain goes down immediately when the bacteria on the cut/sore/whatever dies. dirty = painful.

Exactly. It will hurt for a little while but then you'll get a reprieve from the nagging pain you've been having. And you'll heal faster.

For additional pain relief, there are a number of preparations that form a temporary seal over canker sores. Dap on some gel/paste (or apply a little gel disc over the sore), let dry before closing your mouth (and cry a little from the temporary medicinal sting), and you have a nice pain-free seal that lets you drink orange juice, eat spicy foods, etc. Look for Zilactin, Orabase, Canker Covers, in drug stores/mass merchandisers, typically near the toothache medicine.

As an aside, any trauma to the mouth can cause canker sores. Even vigorous toothbrushing can cause them, if the bristles are hard enough (or frayed enough) to scrape the inside of your mouth. I get them constantly from having pronounced eye teeth, and I've gotten them from eating too much acidic food.

This might be a bit of a dumb question; but is it a bad idea to smoke while having a canker sore?
