Diehard Guinness fans may blush when they hear the news that Guinness brewers are wearing red. This may not be news to UK beer drinkers, but others might not have heard the recent developments last fall wherein the brewers over at Guinness developed a new beer to add to their brand: Guinness Red.
Guinness is launching a new red brew next week to meet the demand for a "bitter-sweet balance." The lighter colour is produced by roasting the barley for a shorter time than usual, which also makes it less bitter, as does using fewer hops. Red Guinness will be tested in 142 pubs across Britain and, if it proves a success, the new variety will be launched nationwide.
The new beer will still have a distinctive white head and be "good for you" with a 4.1% alcohol content. Best part is that Guinness Red, like the original, will require some patience as you pour. Adds sophistication to your brew. Guinness made this official statement:
Spokeswoman Katrina Ward said: We can confirm we are currently working on an innovation called Guinness Red. It is a new variant of Guinness, lightly roasted for a rich red colour and a well-balanced bitter sweet character...
We are expecting to trial Guinness Red in a limited number of pubs in Britain in the coming months, however no decision has yet been made with regards to the details of this test.
It is likely Guinness Red will remain exclusive to the UK market. There is another beer in the Guinness pipeline which may see a wider release: Guinness Mid-Strength. The new beer will have an alcohol content of 2.8%, which make it the choice of breakfast beverage after a night of drinking Guinness Extra Strength.
This is just odd. Read about the history of Guinness and stout's in general. Technically, Im thinking Stitches is right, that it'll be an ale. So, guinness brewing an ale? Not a big deal..they already own the rights to Smythwycks/Smithwicks in Kilkenny, which is a decent Red Styled Ale.
And don't flame me too much...I drink Guinness about 6 times a week, and hit up the brewery religiously once every 5 years or so. So, yeah...Im a fan of their stout. Just don't see the point in another Red or Amber ale on the market, especially when you have so many good Irish styles of that beer out there.
I like Guinness. But I love Smithwicks and don't see this replacing that as my choice in amber. I love beer, though, so I will try it regardless if/when it makes it to the states.
I remember reading about this back in October (I saw in in the Daily Mail Article linked). I feel like the general brewing community debunked it as a joke or false rumor, but I may be wrong. It just didn't seem like Guinness' style and the photo in the Daily Mail is obvious a photoshop tweak of a regular Guinness.
