Okay, so I have to buy a new computer. Mine is dying a slow and horrible death and I can't take it anymore. I'm about ready to throw it out the freakin' window. It's been a while since I've bought a computer. I've always had a PC, but MACs seem to be pretty popular these days. I'm here now to ask you your opinion on whether or not I should by a MAC or PC?

To preclude a that depends on what you do with it responses, here we go: I primarily use it for internet access, and for word processing. However, would also like it to run well for gaming purposes. I pretty much play Total War type games, and first person shooters. I'd also like something that does well with video and image editing as I dabble time to time. Anyway, I'd really really appreciate any comments you might have. Like I said it's been a while since I bought a computer and I stopped keeping up with 'technology' since firewire came out. Yeah, thanks again.

if you want to play videogames, (other than warcraft) you need a PC.

that has been, and remains, the bottom line.

and yes, I know boot camp can run windows xp/vista, however, extreme lack of driver support makes gaming on a boot-camping system nearly impossible.

a good PC can run video encoding/imaging software just as well as a mac.

i've got a mac, and i love it way more than my PC for everything but gaming, which is what i built my PC to do.

its useful to note that since that time, penny arcade (and pvponline) have gone over to the mac side, to the extent of gabe being caught holding his mouse in one hand and the credit card in the other when the iphone came out.

just sayin

If Rome Total War was available on a console, I'd completely dig....
You make a good point though. I'm not going to buy a PC, just to play one game...

Alienware? Primarily for gaming I take it? I've just heard people speak really highly of them, but they never really explained why....

this thread is gonna be just swell.

it's very hard to get rational answers out of even the most intelligent, rational people about which one is better. for some reason people on both sides of the debate feel religiously that they have made the only logical choice, and that the other side is deluded.

I think macs are neat. if I had a big chunk of extra change lying around I might buy one just for nerdy giggles, but my pc does everything I want it to do as well as I need it to do it. I know windows inside and out, so why switch? that's just my experience.

seems like pc's are better for games, but macs are simpler to use for media editing. you might be able to do both. a good gaming pc can run you a pretty penny of course, but the mac minis are fairly inexpensive, although you'll have to buy a mac mouse, keyboard, and [probably pricey] monitor separately.

Wow, how did I never hear of Rome Total War?

Anyway, it could run just fine under Boot Camp on a Mac.

Or, y'know, you could just get your standard USB mouse and keyboard (the U is for Universal) and a bargain monitor with a DVI or VGA connection.

see? five minutes from my implication that macs aren't perfect gems from god's own computer mine to a condescending post implying I'm some kind of idiot. a is for apple! u is for universal!

it's weird what this shit does to people's brains. you can't trust anyone. go with what you like.

I'm eying the 13 inch MacBook, and a new high powered desktop to run Vista. I'll be building the desktop in a month, and I'll probably be buying the Mac after I get my tax refunds.

Question, I have a 19" LCD that runs at 1280x1024 how well will it hook up with the MacBook, does the non pro have any graphics capabilities to speak of?

No seriously. I'm retarted when it comes to this stuff. Point in fact, I have no idea whether you're being sarcastic or not. I love Total War cause I get to hear the little fellers yell out Hastatii, Velites, or Principes, call me a history dork, I dunno.

So yeah, is Total War available on a console? Please don't laugh........

Or more importantly, what did you mean by that?

I use both macs and pcs, but I vastly prefer pcs. One of the reasons is because I learned how to use a computer on a pc. Macs have some odd quirks like you have to delete a cd to eject it. People I know who learned on a mac are completely confused by pcs. Personally, I love the right click button so when I use a mac I use the mouse from a pc. If you are thinking of getting a laptop macs have a neat feature of two finger scrolling vertical and horizontal.

It has been mentioned that for gaming a pc is much better. Macs are good for looking at images, but when that image moves it gets really choppy. Word processing is the same on either one. Surfing the internet is safer on a mac because fewer viruses are geared toward the mac, but most web pages are geared toward the pc. Though as macs become more popular this may change. Hope this helps.

i wasn't trying to start some kind of fight, you know.

while it is true that you can game on a mac, the selection and quality of games avalable makes it completely not worth it.

i use both, i love my mac for everything besides gaming, which is what i built my PC for.

PCs are avalable for much cheaper, even gaming PCs price similarly to high end macs.

I dunno. I've always had the feeling that Macs are just expensive desktop entertainment centers. You pay a price for convenience in the areas of software and modification. That's never an problem for casual users, so the deciding issue becomes the gaming. If you're ready to pay for a top of the line system, you can't go wrong with a PC. You'll find a favorable software market, and if you build it in, you'll have a system that you can keep improving as time passes. A killer PC will also have no problem with photo/video editing.

What about if I'm willing to spend 5,000 on Alienware? Strike that... I want a laptop... I don't need a desktop... where will 5K make the best investment?

5K will buy you the most powerful laptop you can find as well as a top rate display to hook it to.

I for one am more comfortable on a PC so if I was going to invest that much money it would probably be on a PC.

Actually if I had that money I would buy a top of the line desktop as well as a ultra portable notebook (lugging around a huge high powered laptop gets really old).

Valid point, I just seriously got sick of desktops during college when I had to lug them from place to place constantly. I suppose they've probably slimmed them down in recent years. I feel like such a dinasour. I'm not even really sure what a 'ultra portable notebook' entails...

laptops are great if you are cool with not upgrading much.

the thing with laptops nowadays is that they're 'desktop replacemnts'. many laptops are retartedly large, heavy things, because they pack DVD burners, dual core processors and other whatnots.
