I guess Im alone in being sickened by the idea of prostitution.

Although I do agree that all people should be respected regardless of their line of work.

I dont ever want to go to Amsterdam.. Im also against the smoking of anything. I dont look down on people but..........

It's one of those two handers. On the one hand I think prostitution should be at least decriminalised so that those who ply such a trade are not also made into/treated as criminals. People who choose to exchange sexual intercourse, of whatever flavour, for cash shouldn't face criminal prosecution in modern society.

On the other hand, prostitution is exploitation and no matter how hard I try to get my Liberal Western mind around it I can only ever come to the conclusion that no one in their right/stable mind would fuck people for money. They all have to be victims right?

On the other hand from that, there are a million shit, demoralising, demeaning ways to earn a living so maybe fucking isn't as bad as some of those.

Who the fuck knows? I would say it would have to be easier to protect those in the sex industry if it were decriminalised and properly legislated.

I never completely understand the anti-prostitution point of view. I can see it's way of thinking, we even go out for drinks from time to time, but...

I don't know; I feel that it's our body. In a patriarchal culture (don't yell at me, I promise I'm not going to go on a very long feminist rant here) a woman's body can largely work against her. Why shouldn't she reclaim it and make it work *for* her? We all sell our bodies at some point in our lives, anyway, through labor, etc.

And I do also agree with Crivelli. Decriminalization will definitely result in increased security for sex workers, and if we say that we're really just about protecting the workers by working to end the trade, we need to do at least that for them. (Besides, think of the taxable income!)

I heard some news/interview type thing on the radio a few months back that just broke my heart. Girls in their late teens and early twenties selling themselves voluntarily. Saying it gave them money to support themselves and their children and it was the only way they could survive. Some of the girls tried to make it out to be glamorous but you could just tell in their voice they were - dare I say "faking it". Lying to themselves and the interviewer.

Its hard to tell a single mother who makes several hundred hooking a day to get a real job when she has no education whatsoever and would more than likely be working for minimum wage in the food or retail industry to give that up. Even then ones that do give it up usually fall back into it because they cant make near as much legally with what skills they have.

With that said Im sure there are educated people that do this not because its the only option but because perhaps they do enjoy it. I find it impossible to believe that there is no one in that profession that doesnt like the job. We all like it a little different.

Just because you wouldn't be a prostitute doesn't mean normal people couldn't sell sex for money. Sex is a natural instinct that needs to be fulliled occasionally. A Woman who isn't forced into doing that is no more being exploited then a masseuse is being exploited when you get a massage when you are sore.

I'm sure that masseuses (?) everywhere will be grateful for the comparison.

I was going to say other stuff but I really don't know how to take what you've said. I'm sure you're well meaning.
