In Amsterdam, the age-old standard of using "red lights" to illuminate the district where business men with wandering eyes (and hands) might find some lovin' after work will soon be superseded by a monument of more prominent stature. The Dutch city, a longtime advocate of monitoring prostitution via licensed brothels, has announced that, in March, the city will unveil a commemorative statue in its sex-for-sale disctrict, built as a tribute to prostitutes world-wide.

Dutch news agency ANP reported,

The statue, designed by artist Els Rijerse...[is]...made of bronze, shows a woman who confidently looks out into the world.
[...]
"In many countries, prostitutes struggle and people have no respect for them whatsoever. The statue is meant to give all those men and women strength," Mariska Majoor, a former prostitute who commissioned the statue, told ANP.

As a man who constantly uses the services of these wonderful women (that's all my blog is about if you want to read it) I am delighted to read this acknowledgement of them. There is a long history of different cultures at different times in world history, realising the importance of, and consequently giving appropriate praise and respect to prostitutes. Let us hope that more countries follow suit and the respect that Working Ladies deserve continues to grow.

I thought this was going to be about the plans to close about a third of sex trade in Amsterdam. There was something on the news today about it being delayed, but not halted.

I just wish the bulk or the world would wake the fuck up and realise sex sells always has and is the biggest thing there is why perscute and try and deny its existence when all they need to do is legislate it and control it that way and make money of it at the same time.

Sorta like the Venus Kallipygos, hopefully?

I like it. The whole idea has a kind of ancient Greek feel to it. Like the temples and statues of Aphrodite, goddess of lust, love and sexuality, where you could pay tribute, worship, admire, give thanks. Giving the ladies (and fellas) who bring some relief to the lonely some of the respect they deserve. Right on. I want to lay flowers at its feet next time I'm in Amsterdam. And read an essay on it by Camille Paglia.

I wonder what the first piece of graffiti will say?
