Did you find it? Or did it find you?

How did you get so lucky?

Why do you feel rewarded?

Right now, my job (house manager at Cleveland Public Theatre) affords me the chance to brown nose until they give me design/directing work.

I got it because I was a concessionaire on Rocky Horror. I got that because I was a marketing intern. I got that because I saw a job posting on a mailing list and it didn't hurt that one of my professors is the artistic director's wife.

The only thing that sucks is the pay. And the hours. But I do feel rewarded because I'm contributing to a great organization and getting my foot in the door and get to see great shows.

House managing is probably the least fun job in the theatre. All hassle, no glory.

Tomorrow I'm quitting my job at Aaron Brothers Art and Framing, for a job at my university's bookstore. I got the bookstore job because I applied for it and, mindbogglingly, they offered me a temp job through Rush Weeks on the spot. They said there would be a one-in-forty chance of actually being asked to stay on through the end of the school year, and in the end I was the one they asked. The pay isn't great, but it's better. I feel rewarded because I get to read books when it's slow, and though it's cashiering just like my old job, my long-term career goals have infinitely more to do with books than with picture frames and art supplies, and my boss at my internship says that publishing houses look for people with bookstore experience, so hey. It's a step.

my job fell in my lap several years ago ...
i love it. the people i work with are great, the work that i do is easy and for the most part fun. i guess i just lucked out. my employer loves the people who work for him and genuinely cares about our well being.
i consider myself blessed.

Well, if you consider my job the 30 seconds I spend at 12:01 AM sunday filling out a short form so that I get a check in the mail, sure, it's alright. If my job is what I do the other 9 months of the year, no, not particularly happy with it.

right now i'm organizing data on ohio sex offenders. and sometimes i get to give college students surveys about their attitudes toward online sexual activity. research isn't really my thing, but the topics are interesting and the people i work with are pretty cool.

oh, i got the job because the lab manager who interviewed me thought i was "weird enough to handle it."

I get to learn about new industries every day. I get to work with some of the smartest people I've ever met. I get some pretty nice perks. I get to work in a very creative and fun environment. I planned to go into advertising when I realized I wasn't going to make it as a rock star, and I'm very happy with how it has turned out.

i liked my job, but i'm tired of it now, and know that any other retail job will be just as frustrating (in regards to doing the same shit over and over, having to pick up insane amounts of slack because other people can't handle simple tasks, people getting passed over for promotions that they absolutely deserve, etc.). i don't want to work - i'd seriously rather be a homemaker (minus kids, though). unfortunately, my boyfriend is an independent web designer, and a shy one at that. i've never been a "career" person, and, though i have many skills and learn things very quickly, i don't think any of my particular skills are good enough or interesting enough to completely rely on (and i know i'd get burned out on making a career out of things i consider hobbies normally, like art and cooking).

right now, the rough plan is to get myself a domain, start a little blog, attract some readers, then plaster the thing with ads and live off the money they generate (while hopefully occasionally selling items i make through the blog). then i can stay at home, keep a nice, pretty house/apartment (when i have one of my own again) and not be too tired from working 40+ hours a week to do simple chores or work on projects.

I've had my job for 9.5 years. It has it's upa and downs. I get to read a lot, but then again I also get yelled at, spit at, assaulted, flashed by teenage sex offenders, hassled by beauractratic desk jockeys who have no fucking clue about what we do etc etc.

Oh, I got my job because I needed employment and my friend helped me pass out my resume, this job was out of the same building as his job at the time. I am the overnight supervisor at a residential treatment center for at-risk and emotionally disturbed boys.

I think I might like to try something new soon. I am very good at my job, but I don't know if all the stress has been worth the peace of mind. I just don't know if there is anything I could get into now that would be worth it. frown

Did you find it? Or did it find you?

- i attracted it.

How did you get so lucky?

- my mom used to have coffee with the old lab manager and worked me into a few conversations. i wowed them with my resume and enthusiasm and got the job immediately.

Why do you feel rewarded?

- i love my co-workers and have had some amazing experiences thanks to the knowledge i've gained working there... i've also met a few of my very best life-long friends there. smile

- i also like the freedom... i pretty much make my own schedule.

I used to build cabins/houses on a small island, drink beer, drive a beat up truck and have fun, work with pretty cool people and the owners of the houses were always really apreciative. now I'm finishing townhouses in fake wood MDF crap, sometimes I cant tell wich one I'm in 'cause they all look the same, completly identical. 3 more months then back to my island. tick...tick..tick....

i'm a social worker and i LOVE my job... i can see you all raising your eyebrows at me!! but i'm being serious!! right now i'm working as a children's counsellor.

first i worked some shitty paying, but super rewarding jobs including 2 yrs of overnight shifts while i went to school for a few years (okay, 6 yrs), then i had to move almost 2000 miles from home to a small town in the middle of nowhere on the 53rd parallel (the frozen north) and THEN i found a job that is so much fun and really rewarding that actually pays the bills. it actually more than pays the bills for once. after a couple of years of experience, i should be able to move back to the city and still have a great job like this one.

so i'd say that i didn't just stumble upon this job, but worked damn hard for it. but it's great, and as exhausting and emotionally draining as it can be some days, i love it and wouldn't want to do anything else. biggrin

i hope this didn't sound like bragging, but you asked! confused

I found my job (as a caregiver for a quadriplegic) on craigslist. I was in no way qualified for the position, but I got the job, and I've had it for nearly two years. It's pretty depressing that I now know more about spinal cord injuries than most doctors...

I have no issues with my job but I'm not even going to try and say that it's anything great. The pluses it has is that it pays well enough (plus I have a raise coming up shortly), it's easy yet gives me enough so I don't get bored and quit and finally it's setting me up to finally get into school.

I am in pure, unbridled love with my job.

I sort of fell into my job. Which is to say that I never had ambitions towards it before I applied. It's a civil service job...so I had to take a written exam and a physical endurance test before I could even interview for the job...so while I did kind of happen into it...I still believe I earned it.

How did I get so lucky? I dunno...I like the think that it's because I paid my dues by working at several meaningless, soul-sucking, deadend jobs before I got my current career.

I feel rewarded because I love my job. I live two blocks away from where I work...so every day that I walk to work...I do so smiling. It's rewarding work, I contribute to the community and for all of this I am paid a decent salary.

I'll never be rich...but I'll always be happy.

I think we can close the thread now. This is probably the greatest answer we'll hear.
