I keep thinking a good idea is my ticket outta here, I just haven't come up with it yet. By here I mean the general rat race we've developed because of our financial responsibilities, such as rent, food, entertainment, kids. Every year it seems like, someone comes up with a genius idea that seems at once brilliant and basic, to the point where common sense dictated that such and such product had to be developed eventually. Digg is one example, Craigslist another, the George Foreman Grill, the list goes on. These people are rich. They don't have to work anymore. Except they probably do, because they are slightly crazy.

I just read that a father/student soccer coach in Peterborough, England, has invented waterproof socks. The bastard is gonna be rich, cause what idiot doesn't want a waterproof sock? I'm talking just a pair, maybe two if you live in Seattle or Portland, or some foreign, rainy place. You can't tell me honestly you don't want one.

A worried father has invented the world's first waterproof football socks. Michael Shuster put an end to the complaints of frozen feet from his four football-loving sons by designing socks that are waterproof, breathable and can be worn over a shin pad. The 41-year-old spent 18 months adapting technology by SealSkinz, an outdoor clothing firm in Peterborough, to produce a sock that leaves feet warm, dry and blister-free.

The new socks are being tested on humans at Premiership football clubs, where as long as they don't cause foot cancer or something will undoubtedly make Mr. Shuster a very rich man. The socks should be open to the general public by next winter.

I think I'm coming to grips with the fact that I am not going to have this great idea I'm waiting for. Still, I have some really smart friends who are highly trained and skilled technology buffs. And every once in a while, when I'm watching Entourage, I can't help but think I'd be good at that and maybe one of them will invent something like YouTube and I can be in their Geek Entourage. That would be awesome.

I don't mean to rain (no pun intended) on anyone's parade, but waterproof socks have been around for a longtime. He may have improved on the SealSkinz (manufacturer of waterproof socks and gloves mentioned in the article) design, and he may have invented waterproof football socks, but the basic product was already there. I own three pair by three different manufacturers, one of which is SealSkins, another by Gore (makers of goretex).

I dunno if it's all that simple. a sock that keeps water out, but lets air circulate? that's actually a pretty goddamn intelligent sock. and I really want some.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as turin already stated, Goretex socks are supposed to be waterproof. Now I could be wrong in that Goretex socks are water resistant and not able to be used like in the picture.

I have a pair of goretex lined boots which are 10 years old and still totally waterproof. The socks have been available for at least that many years so these are about as "revolutionary" as sliced bread.

Gortex is the original waterproof and breathable fabric. It has holes small enough for water VAPOR to pass thru, but not liquid. Sounds odd but it works. Gore's patent on micro-porous fabric ran out years ago so now several companies make similar products sold under various trade names.

yeah, I own many pairs of Sealskinz waterproof socks, and I can personally vouch for their effectiveness. I had to wade through a river once (albeit at a ford). I poured tons of water out of my boots, but inside the socks my feet were toasty and dry!

Hoorah!

But where does your sweat go? Does it just pool in the bottom of the sock? Perhaps absorption isn't important in some sports, but I imagine that would be a problem for runners and the like.

Goretex sox also wick away the moisture. They work best with goretex boots. They are also insulating, so you can stand still in ice cold water and be fine.

Now all I need is some waterproof undies. So when I fall through some ice I won't be able to feel anything, EXCEPT my feet and the goods.
