If you've ridden the New York City subway in the last few weeks, you've probably seen posters for it, and wondered what the hell it is. If you work in Mid-town, you might have stumbled onto Sleepwalkers, a Doug Aitken piece being projected onto the four walls of MoMa, and wondered what the hell it is.
The project is a 15-minute movie starring Donald Sutherland, Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power), Tilda Swinton, Seu Jorge, and Ryan Donowho.
This nighttime installation comprises eight large-scale moving images projected around the Museum and on its facades, enlivening the architecture with the nocturnal journeys of five city inhabitants a bicycle messenger (Donowho), and electrician (Jorge), a postal worker (Marshall), a businessman (Sutherland), and an office worker (Swinton) as they awaken in the evening and maker their way into the city. These characters provide a blueprint for the metropolis as a living, breathing organism fueled by the desires, energies, and ambitions of its inhabitants. Sleepwalkers is a broken narrative, without beginning or end Because the piece is spread around the Museum's exteriro, viewers must circle the building to fully experience the work-in the process, becoming active participants in Aitken's project
While you're becoming part-human/part-art/part-cog in Aitken's masterplan you can dial (408) 794-0886 to get some commentaries. The piece is running from now until February 12, nightly from 5 to 10pm.
Here is a teaser for Aitken's American movie debut:
Since it has reopened, MoMa has always been free on Friday nights, so thats another way to avoid spending the $, but then its a little more crowded because new yorkers flock to free shit.
