These are not people who are standing up and saying, "my life is complete without a deity or theology." They are publishing, in a public forum, a statement not about what they believe, but what they don't believe.

Yes. By definition that's what Athiesm is - what you don't believe.

Also, the "no good or bad" crap is shite, and I believe that, given a full debate, you'd find that anyone claiming to be a true moral relativist would prove not to be. Sort of like the kid in college who screams "property is theft," until something of his gets stolen or messed with.

You don't have to believe in morality to not want your shit stolen.

Wow, and to think all this time nobody wanted my shit. I would've stopped flushing it and started bagging it to sell on ebay if I knew that before.

As for it being immature... is it immature when Christians wear WWJD bracelets and "God is Awesome!" shirts? Are Christians being immature when they slap an ichthus on their car? Or how about those "in case of rapture, this car will be driverless" bumper stickers? Are all those Christian TV and radio stations being immature when they beam their message through the public airwaves?

The way I see it is like this:

The list of things the average person believes in is pretty short compared to the list of things that same person doesn't believe in. I'm fine with people walking around with symbols depicting their faith, political opinion, musical tastes, subculture or whatever. It's their way of saying "I believe in this particular thing".

People who wear blatantly anti-something symbols, however, are making a specific standpoint. Why would an atheist chose to sign for something that rejects the Holy Spirit (Christianity) and not at the same time reject Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Shintoism, Hermeticism, New Age-philosophy, Reiki, etc? After all, it's all part and parcel of his atheist belief.

No, the lack of belief in something is just that - a lack of belief. I don't believe in Hasidic Judaism, but I don't go around with a pin saying "Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov can kiss my ass!" - namely because I'm an atheist and Hasidic Judaism doesn't apply to me in any way. I don't take a stand against religion, I just chose not to believe in them.

Yay for pointless stunts?

Really now. If you don't believe in God (good for you, by the way.), what's the point of insulting him? I mean, is there really any point in yelling at an imaginary entity? You're not convincing anyone of his nonexistence....rational discussion is a much better way of accomplishing that.

All it seems like to me is a way to irritate Christians, and I don't see that as particularly productive. One of the reasons I find (evangelical) Christians so irritating is the fact that they're coming by and bothering me with their religious beliefs. Atheists really should show them the correct way to behave by demonstrating it... tongue

I mean, it's not especially upsetting, either. I just find it rather silly.
