Ladies loved him in his swashbuckling finest but now it seems that actor Johnny Depp is trading in his sea-soaked leathers for fringe, spandex cat suits and a mustache that just won't quit. Depp has supposedly inked a deal to play late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in an upcoming film about the legendary singer's life.

The film is in development under Robert De Niro's Tribeca Productions.

If he does indeed play Mercury, how many times would that be that Depp has played real people in movies? He's got to have played more actual people than any other person alive.

Johnny Depp is an amazing Actor, very good at the strange characters.
Hopefully it will be another masterpiece for him, as well as for freddies memory of course.

i can't think of anyone better for the role.

is this some kind of joke? j depp should've dropped dead six years ago..yeah, he's not that great.
they need to find a talented, versitile unknown, not some old geezer who's played the same "charming/quirky/dirty?" character the past six movies he's made.

First thing I thought of too . Forget the moustache , what about that overbite ? Honestly , this is some of the best casting I think I've ever heard of as far as looks go . They're going to have to furry up his body too , ala Borat .

y'know, if Depp does play Freddie, that's just about as awesome as it gets.
