I've had a Hello Kitty picture book from Japan all my life. It's one of my treasures. I never had any idea what was going on, but I liked it. These days I'd never buy anything HK, just because it's not so much my style.

i don't really understand what is so appealing about hello kitty, yet i find myself amassing more and more hk products anyway. she has an unnameable cuteness, i suppose. it's probably some sort of japanese corporate mind control.
