Richard Linklater's adaptation of Philip K. Dick's brilliantly paranoid, druggy novel. Earns bonus points for being one of the only Dick film adaptations to actually get the source material right. A great movie for 2 reasons: its hallucinatory animation style (first used by Linklater in "Waking Life", the technique is further refined for "Scanner"), and its excellent cast (biggest surprise: Keanu was outstanding).
Really?
A Scanner Darkly? Seriously? It got the source material right? Because to me it came across as a stoner film.
In comparison to other Dick film adaptations like Bladerunner (which I love, even if its missing a lot of stuff from the novel), Scanner does stay pretty close to the story of the novel. Hollywood has a history of adapting Dick badly, and in spite of its faults (as good as Keanu was in the film, he was still a terrible choice to play Arctor), Scanner is the most faithful to Phil's original vision. If anyone could do a PKD book justice, Linklater could (for proof of the man's Dick-loving ways, look no further than his own monologue about Philip writing "Flow My Tears The Policeman Said" in "Waking Life").
I can see what you mean by it coming across as a stoner film, though. As much as I like the film, I'll concede that it isn't as dark (and desperate) as the book.

I forgot to mention: if you're into horror movies, The Descent is really excellent. I'm not overly into them, actually, but I love good filmmaking. It's clever, it's a little funny, and it's gory, but not at the expense of scaring the bejeezus out of you. Great one to watch with the lights out.
man, i thought that movie was TERRIBLE. to each his own, i suppose

Also - MollyMolly, I don't know your exact circumstances, so this may be terribly unhelpful, but have you considered Netflix or a similar service? If you're in a smaller town it's probably not going to be as immediate as it is in the immediate vicinity of a shipping center, but it really does take all the work out of renting, especially for the carless like myself.
Well, I've had it suggested to me before; but for myself, at least, I just can't justify the packaging waste and accumulated fuel costs/pollution of mailing lots of little DVDs back and forth. I do appreciate the suggestion, though (and all of the helpful movie ideas from everyone so far, too).

I still have yet to see Children Of Men or Pan's Labyrinth. I heard great reviews from friends about both films.
As far as some of my favorite movies from 2006, i gotta give it up for Beerfest, Grandma's Boy and Snakes On A Plane for all the drunken good times I had in their company.
