I don't get out to the cinema very often. In fact, basically, never. There isn't much shown around here, and anyway, I have no car, etc. So, I tend to rely on DVDs for my movies — and for various reasons, renting is really inconvenient for me, so I have to know something is good (or take a risk) and just buy it.

Since 2006 is over (in most time zones), what were your favorite movies of this past year? I want to know what to look for when it comes to DVD (or, for movies from earlier in the year, good things that are already out on DVD).

I like a wide variety of movie genres; I guess I am partial to dramas, although I really enjoy all sorts of things, if well done. So, anything that you think is good, I might be interested in. A bit of spoiler-free summarization might be useful, though, as I'm pretty un-cool and might not have heard of the films you mention.

Any recommendations?

P.S. If you give uncovered spoilers, I will have to throw a sharpened DVD at you, ninja-style. I really will.

NINJA STAR!

Dammit, I can't remember what movie that's from, you know where someone keeps threatening to use a ninja star? Anyone know? That's gonna keep me up all night.

top of my head reccomendations for 2006

Brick

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

calssic film noir with excellent dialogue and really well shot. the catch is that it's set in the world of a Southern California high school. but it still works really really well. some of the best writing I've seen in a movie in years. and it stars the geeky kid from Third Rock from the Sun

Syriana

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

probably the most important movie of the year. It deals with the whole Middle East issue. from the energy issue to the american foreign policy issue to the recruitment of suicide bombers from the young and downtrodden. It gives an honest...and very accurate look at what is going on over there and here at home. and outstanding performances by the entire cast.

Science of Sleep

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

Guy with severe reality disassociation issues meets girl and falls for girl. lots of dream like squences. Michael Gondry does good work.

Casino Royale

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

Best bond movie since Sean Connery. It modernizes (and at the same time takes the Bond movies back to the actual novels). The new bond is more mean than slick. but it works. a good action movie with a romantic side...that ends not so very well.

that's it for now.

Here's three films that haven't been mentioned yet that definitely deserve a view or two:

A Scanner Darkly

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

Richard Linklater's adaptation of Philip K. Dick's brilliantly paranoid, druggy novel. Earns bonus points for being one of the only Dick film adaptations to actually get the source material right. A great movie for 2 reasons: its hallucinatory animation style (first used by Linklater in "Waking Life", the technique is further refined for "Scanner"), and its excellent cast (biggest surprise: Keanu was outstanding).

Half Nelson

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

This movie takes a cliched subgenre of film and tears it a new asshole. "Half Nelson" is the film that shakes down "Dangerous Minds" for lunch money during recess. Its the one film about an idealistic white teacher instructing a classroom full of troubled black youth that doesn't come packaged with easy answers or overly likeable characters (indeed, it may be the only film of its kind to openly mock the idealistic teacher stereotype, showing the teach as more of a figure of impotence and frustration than a role model).

The Departed

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

The Departed is: 1) further proof that Leonardo DiCaprio should be forgiven for "Titanic", 2) a testament to Martin Scorsce's ability to still direct a great crime film, 3) that Marky Mark Wahlberg can be a funny bastard, 4) evidence that Jack Nicholson just can't fake a decent Irish accent, 5) a tense, bitter film about the corrosive effect undercover life has on a police officer, or 6) the best balancing act of art and entertainment from a major studio in 2006.

I will let you know once I've seen Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth. Right now...The Departed was very good. Nothing I've seen yet has really sent a bolt down my spine, though. I haven't seen Half Nelson or The Queen or Letters from Iwo Jima, either, so I'm optimistic that I'll find something I can definitively point to.

Right now, at Metacritic the top rated movie by score is Pan's Labyrinth, which looks absolutely incredible, in my opinion. I'm dying to see it.

Oh, and Little Miss Sunshine was very funny. And Brick is well worth watching if you're a fan of old noir movies.

I have to agree.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
This movie was so hyped. I was waiting literally 6 months to see this movie. I went on the sole fact that in my mind there was no conceivable way for there to ever be that many snakes on a plane. And well, just to see a bunch of people get killed by snakes, whilst on a plane.

However, when the movie turned out to have a plot and a fairly decent one. In one sense I was kind of let down and at the same time kind of happy.

Nevertheless I bought it first thing this morning.

Also I don't know if it was made in 2006, but as a drunk Beerfest was the funniest movie's I've seen all year.

I forgot to mention: if you're into horror movies, The Descent is really excellent. I'm not overly into them, actually, but I love good filmmaking. It's clever, it's a little funny, and it's gory, but not at the expense of scaring the bejeezus out of you. Great one to watch with the lights out.

Eh. I dunno about a decent plot. It was pretty silly. However I was surprised to note that the snake-related deaths were actually handled very seriously (and gorily). The rest of the film was so campy that that stood out.

Also - MollyMolly, I don't know your exact circumstances, so this may be terribly unhelpful, but have you considered Netflix or a similar service? If you're in a smaller town it's probably not going to be as immediate as it is in the immediate vicinity of a shipping center, but it really does take all the work out of renting, especially for the carless like myself.

If nothing else, they have aggregated user ratings and reviews. Not that they're as trustworthy as the good folk of SG...
