If Rocky can do it…

In an age where our multiplexes are full of remakes and sequels, it should come as no surprise that the 64-year-old Harrison Ford is set dust off the old fedora and pick up his whip for another installment in the Indiana Jones series.

After failing to agree on a script, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have finally settled on a draft that satisfies both parties.

The BBC reports that:

Lucas said he and Steven Spielberg had recently finalized the script, and promised it was "the best one yet".

No details of the plot are available but Lucas has said that:

It would be "a character piece" including some "very interesting mysteries".

Harrison Ford has optimistically stated that he will:

"bring the same physical action" to a fourth movie as he did to the first three - in which he carried out many of his own stunts.

How he manages to pull that off is anyones guess. Don't get too excited, the new film won't be released until 2008.

As AICN said, this isn't news. Lucas has been saying that it's gonna happen "next year" for the past 3 years or so. I wouldn't put a whole heap of faith in this 'announcement' being any different than the last 5 or so.

Cold war indeed. I heard the working title is "Indiana Jones and the search for Chinese Democracy".

What's Axl Rose got to do with it?

Anyway, my childhood hero is coming back. Score.

Nice GnR lyric reference!

and Axl's got nothing to do with it but they've been talking about another Indy movie for a while now just like Axl has been promising his new...

Fine, I'm half drunk and it seemed like it made more sense to me before I read it back to myself.

Ok?

Yeah, I love Indy too, but Harrison Ford is getting craggy in his old age (not that I don't dig the guy). I don't know if he'll be able to pull it off.

Old news. And why is that someone who is over fifty, sixty, or seventy is useless when they're a white guy from the US, but an unstoppable ass-kicker when they're a Buddhist monk from China? You can do Kung Fu when you're old, but not shoot a gun, box, or use a whip?

so, i went to best buy today and asked for the indiana jones box set. the guy had no idea what I was talking about. that would have been fine if it was because he didn't know there was a box set. he didn't know who indiana jones was though. you should not be gainfully employed at an entertainment store and not know who indy is. I mean really. indy. thats like... hmm i was about to say han solo... seriously though, how could you contain the ass kickery of indy and han solo in one man? Ford kicks ass, i look forward to seeing an old Indy.

To be fair, Best Buy has a number of non-entertainment departments, and you could have been talking to a regular staffer of, say, household appliances or wireless, who was sent to the video section because of light staffing.

But then I think "he didn't know who Indiana Jones was?" and feel just as old as I do when my students tell me they've never heard of Jimmy Carter.

biggrin

The new film has to have Nazis in it. Out of the three films so far, the one without Nazis was a bit pants and the ones with Nazis in were great... But if they have Ford acting his age, then I suppose that can't happen, 'cause there won't be any Nazis around. Hmm, I'm stumped.

AICN is hardly a reliable portal for providing accurate information. I'll take the BBC's word over Harry Knowles anyday of the week.

What gives this story credence, IMO, is the entry on IMDb.

Am I the only one who thought he acted... old... in Last Crusade. Honestly, I found The Fugitive more action packed. I love Indy, but I thought he was old then... in '89

I hate it when the people behind the scenes say things like "best one yet" and "mysteries." Last I heard Lucas wanted to run the same cliched ideas of every sequel (last rumor... gee, the hero has a bastard child that he finally reunites with who happens to be Lucas-darling Natalie Portman) and the mindset that hurt his star opera.

You want to make us happy, Lucas (sorry for speaking for all of us, okay, what I want)/Spielberg/Ford??? Give me Short Round! Sallah! And Goddammit, let Indy end up with someone his own age... how's Marian these days? My wish, besides the aforementioned, is that Indy passes the mantle, like the guy in the intro to last crusade, 'you lost today kid..." and all that. Though it would never happen, I'd like to see competition between Indy and Short Round with Short finally getting the hat... I had a great concept worked out. Guess I should have submitted it to the Trilogy (meaning the guys in charge).

That entry's been there for a long time. Along with Spielberg's Lincoln project which is due out the same year. Not that that's anything nearing impossible for Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park and Schindler's List both came out in 1993, which is really astonishing), but IMDB entries don't mean much and Lincoln, last I saw it news stories (admittedly a while ago), was stalled.

But as far as I know they never both announced they were happy with a script. Last I knew Frank Darabont wrote a draft, Lucas didn't like it, and Darabont got all pissy.

I'm like a lot of people here in not having a huge amount of confidence in Lucas anymoe. Spielberg is a different story. I could see him having a little fun with the fact that Harrison/Indy is NOT 40 anymore. And yes, I know Spielberg's track record isn't perfect, but I still have some faith in him.

Don't let us down, Steven....

this movie should be good. even if it isnt im still gonna enjoy it. such a throw back. and from what im hearing... not that its 100% true, but the story is supposedly revolving around the spear of destiny.

According to legend, the Spear of Destiny (also known as the Holy Lance, Holy Spear, Lance of Longinus, or Spear of Longinus) is the spear that is reported in the Gospel of John (19:31-37) as having pierced the side of Jesus during his crucifixion. supposedly during ww2 it fell into the hands of adolf.

for more check out spear of destiny
