im sure its already been said by someone before me. but i need to rant right now. it seems evertime i turn around hot topic has either bastardized something from the past or hoped on the lastest craze. for instance, my wife and I went out to a place called Red and Jerrys to have a few drinks and maybe go play a few games. while we were down there, my wife see's a girl wearing an Invader Zim hoodie. we both big fans of the cartoon, and so my wife says to the girl "i really like your Gir hoodie" to witch the girl replies, "who?".. so needless to say, she tells the girl waht she is talking about. the next words out of her mouth were "ive never seen it, i just saw it at Hot Topic and thought it was cool. so thats just one example anouther would be the countless kids wearing nightmare before christmas everything and not having a damn clue who Tim Burton is. i could be here for hours and count how many more occurences of these types of things. to me Hot topic is just a disenchanted Ambercrombie and Fitch... there i feel a bit better now. have a pleasent night everyone. also, if ou dont like what i wrote, too damn bad.
There's nothing wrong with Hot Topic. There's something wrong with dumb kids that wear pop-culture reference shirts but don't understand the reference. Don't wear a Ramones or Green Lantern symbol shirt if you don't listen to the Ramones and don't know who Green Lantern is.

Why not?
Cause its stupid. Its pretentious and if somebody asks you about it and you go "Zuh?" then you look as dumb as you are for wearing that shirt in the first place and now it's public knowledge.

So if I see a shirt with a graphic on it that I like, but I don't actually know what it is, I shouldn't buy it?

But why does that matter? Why is it not appropriate to wear something purely for aesthetic reasons? Isn't that why we wear all our other clothes? Why should anyone really give a fuck?
